ROGERS, Douglas William (Bill)
February 14, 1921 - August 30, 2013
It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to a dear husband and friend. Mr. Douglas W. (Bill) Rogers, FCA of Edmonton passed away peacefully on August 30, 2013 at the age of 92 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma and her extended family, as well as his many friends and colleagues. Also survived by his niece, Clare Greenfield; and nephew, Steven Greenfield of England, as well as great-nieces Emily, Alice and Emma; and great-nephew, Harry. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice and his sister, Edna Greenfield.
Bill was born in Birmingham, England in 1921. He came to Canada in 1945 with the Royal Air Force and met his first wife, Beatrice.
Bill had a distinguished career as the Auditor General of Alberta. He joined the office of the Provincial Auditor of Alberta in 1948 and in 1958 he was appointed Director of Data Processing (Alberta). In 1966, he was appointed Assistant Provincial Auditor (Data Processing- Alberta). Then in 1972, he was appointed the Provincial Auditor (Alberta). As a result of the Act change in 1978, he became the first Auditor General of Alberta. Bill retired in 1986 but continued to work as a consultant for many years.
Bill was interesting, passionate, intelligent, kind and stubborn. He loved and promoted technology from the moment he saw his first ham radio. He came to Canada as a soldier with the Royal Air Force in the 1940s and ended up becoming Alberta's Auditor General from 1972 through 1986. He valued friends and family, and loved animals. He was always positive and never had an unkind word to say about anyone.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services-Harmony Chapel, 10541 - 81 Avenue, Edmonton, N.W. on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, P.O. I worked closely with Bill for more than twenty years. He was a leading pioneer in the adoption of automated information systems in the public sector and virtually "wrote the book" on IT auditing and control systems in Canada. He was a true professional and made enormous contributions to the development of public sector accounting and auditing standards and practices in Canada and internationally.
Bill was a remarkable leader, dedicated public servant, and wonderful friend. I am so sorry to learn of his passing.
Sincerely, Al O'Brien

Dear Uncle Bill

You will always be remembered for your gentle kindness which I first encountered when you took me for my first trip to London in the mid-sixties. Although you were missed by your parents and sister, they recognised that you had made such a successful life in Canada. I and my family, Niki, Emma & Harry, were so lucky to see you in latter years and will never forget your kindness and generosity.

Rest in peace, reunited with those that you love.

Yours Stephen

I had the honour of working for Bill (always Mr. Rogers to me) for many years. His integrity, loyalty and fairness to all could never be questioned. When I think of those years working as his secretary I find myself smiling. His was a life lived honourably.

Bill was a true gentlemen and a wonderful friend. I am very grateful for the positive contributions he made to the world simply by being himself - a kind, sincere and thoughtful man. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
