MARKEN, Edwin Fridtjof Edwin Fridtjof Marken died peacefully in his sleep September 19, 2003, aged 92. Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Edwin is survived by his wife, Ilyne; his sons, Ronald (Patricia), John (RoseMarie), and Daniel; his grandchildren, Erik (Kim), Siri (David), Kristian (Leonor), Liv (John), Kari (Oguz), Paul, Kristen, Mali, and Kaley; his great-grandchildren, Haakon, Zakary, Astrid, Jakob, Erik, Max, Luke, and Leif; his step-children, MaryAnn (Bob) Westgard, Don (Kay), Stuart (deceased) and Sylvia. Edwin was predeceased by his beloved first wife, Adelaide Constance (d. 1980), his father and mother, Ole Jenson Marken and Anna Boraas Marken, and his siblings, Ragnvald, Valborg, Ethel, and Norman. Born in 1911 in Louisburg, Minnesota, Ed moved as a child with his family to Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He studied at LCBI, Outlook, Saskatchewan, St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and the Universities of Saskatchewan and Alberta. Ed's thousands of students will remember him as a great and dedicated teacher, a man of wisdom, creativity, and humour. He taught four years at LCBI (Outlook, Saskatchewan) and for three years at Round Hill High School. His most lasting commitment was as a teacher at Camrose Lutheran College, serving there for thirty-seven years, teaching chemistry, physics, mathematics, and music. He was the much-revered director of the CLC Choir and the Messiah Lutheran senior choir for over a quarter of a century. A tireless and passionate member of the Messiah congregation, Ed Marken was a member of many committees, showing strong leadership and insight. Ed loved music, genealogy, wood-working, and building beautiful clocks. All his children rise up and call him blessed. The family extends special thanks to the wonderful medical staff of St. Mary's Hospital and to MaryAnn and Bob Westgard for their loving attentions to Ed. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 22, 2003 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4810 50 St., Camrose, AB. A private interment service will be held at the Camrose Valleyview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be given to the Bethany Group or to the E.F. Marken Scholarship at Augustana University College. Weber Funeral Home (Camrose) (780) 672-3131.
