Helen FREELAND Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Sep. 24, 2012.
FREELAND, Helen Bell
August 28, 1924 - September 21, 2012
Helen Bell (Caulfield) Freeland passed away September 21, 2012 after living a full life in Peace River, Alberta.
Helen was a force to be reckoned with. She was a feisty Scottish war bride who knew how to work and inspire those around her. After leaving her home outside Glasgow, Scotland in 1945 she followed her husband, who was in the Canadian Air-Sea Rescue, to Peace River, Alberta where they would raise two sons together.
Helen had a large market vegetable garden and employed many young Peace River boys. Many of these boys grew up to be successful businessmen and have acknowledged Helen as the person who 'taught them how to work'. She was a successful businesswoman in her own right and later managed her husband and sons' law office and owned and operated two apartment buildings.
Helen's greatest love was her eight grandchildren. When the children were 'wee' they presented Helen with a hand-made gold medal for being an outstanding Grandmother. She truly was a gold medal Grandma; providing swimming lessons, arts and crafts, road trips, untold sleepovers, outings to the circus and opera and trips abroad with her beloved grandkids. Helen's grandchildren adore her and will miss her example and unconditional love.
Helen enjoyed playing bridge and curling. She had a green thumb and loved to garden. Helen travelled the world and was a Henry Georgist.
Helen is predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years; John Wilbur Freeland, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her two sons, Donald (Carol) and David (Jane), her sister Betty in Scotland, her eight grandchildren; Cynthia, Chrystia, Sean, Natalka, Rebecca, Katie, Adik and Anne, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held at the St. James Anglican Church in Peace River, AB, Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
'O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.'

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to all the Freeland family on the passing of Helen. Her pioneer spirit and work ethic were well know in the Peace River Country. She was a close and loyal friend to my mother for many years. A friendship my mother truly cherished. It was always a lively time when Helen was around. She was a inspiration to many and will be truly missed.

Most sincere condolences on the loss of an amazing woman. I only met her once at Natalka and Rob's wedding but I am very grateful for that. She was clearly a total live wire full of energy, wit and humanity. May she rest in peace.

From John, "You've been telling me sweet stories about your Grandma for the last 20 years. I only met her once, if memory serves--at your wedding. Regardless, she's an inspiration. We should all live such noble lives, Becky, all of us . . ."
