KORNELSEN, Isaak
July 14, 1991 - August 27, 2012
Isaak Kornelsen died tragically in a collision on August 27 while biking to work along Whyte Avenue.
A bright student, lifelong runner, gifted musician, creative spirit, and thoughtful, loving friend, he will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and teammates. Though he was exceptionally talented in many areas, his work ethic and humility were an inspiration to all. He was passionate about running, learning Swedish, vegetarianism, and his job as a server and cook at Cafe Mosaics.
Isaak is survived by his parents, Nikki Ellis and Kevin Kornelsen; his sister, Al; his grandparents, Donelda (Walter) Parker, Heidi and Rudy Kornelsen, and Robert (Wendy) Ellis; and his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1 at McKernan Baptist Church (11103 - 76 Avenue). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society or to an environmental charity of your choice.

I know this is bit late and I don't know if anyone will see this, but Isaac has never been far from my thoughts since the accident. As a regular customer at Cafe Mosaics, perhaps I did not know him as well as many of his close friends or family, but I felt that we connected on some level. I always looked forward to seeing his smiling face when I went to the restaurant and also hoped that at some point we would actually be able to be friends. Now hearing more about him, I realize there were so many different things we would have had in common: music, running, and vegetarianism. I know this sounds corny, but this experience has taught me to never underestimate the value of acquaintances and to not wait when I want to build friendships. I will never forget Isaac, my life is richer for having even met him.

Isaak was easily one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was bright and filled with an inextinguishable brightness that will always reminded me just how much one person's smile and optimism can make such a tremendous positive impact on the people around you. I'll never forget his kindness.

Highly intelligent, athletic and musically gifted. All these things come to mind when I remember Isaak. But my overwhelming memory is of a very humble young man with a gentle spirit.

I didn't know Isaak personally, but I knew him as my favorite waiter at Cafe Mosaics who always served us with a smile and was always so cheery. You could tell he truly had a passion for life, and I will miss his smiling face when we eat at his restaurant in the future. xoxo

To Isaak's family:

I had the honor to know Isaak and run in Edmonton Thunder with him and Alanna.

My brother Curtis told me of what happened recently and I was shocked.

I remember Isaak as so bright, so full of light, so intelligent and talented. Although his passing is sad, please feel solace in how much he touched even the most distant of acquaintances on his journey.

Sending you all support.

To the Kornelsen Family,

We both went to Avalon with Isaak and we have nothing but good memories of him in class and at band camp. He was well liked by everyone we knew and admired by so many people for his brilliance, talent, and dedication. We would always compete for the highest marks with him but he always managed to be the best. Isaak was an unforgettable person and we feel lucky to have known him. Your family is in our thoughts and we hope that you know he touched so many peoples lives.

Dear Nikki and Alana,

We've met only a few times and always through your Mom and Grandmother, Donelda, with whom we regularly walk. We learned of the tragic accident while trying to track down Donelda last Wednesday. Over the years we have heard so much about Isaak and his accomplishments. Our shock and sadness can no doubt not approach what you are experiencing. But please know that our thoughts and hearts are with you all.

Dear Kevin, Nikki and Alana,
We only knew Isaak as a precious and delightful baby during our time at McLaurin Memorial Baptist Church (before moving east twenty years ago.) Our hearts mourn with you in this time of pain, sorrow, and heartache. You continue to be in our prayers and in the midst of your grief we ask God to bring you comfort moment by moment. May wonderful memories of Isaak also help to soothe your grieving hearts.
With our thoughts, prayers, and care,

I am not able to attend the service today, but please know that I will be holding you up in prayer today and continuing on. When Isaak smiled, his whole face lit up. The countless heartfelt tributes to him attest to how he also lit up the lives of those around him.

It was my great privilege to be Isaak's Math 31 AP teacher at Strathcona High School. It was, for me, a wonderful opportunity to work with someone so brilliant and with such a passion for learning. Isaak was, in his quiet, determined way, an inspiration to his teachers and to his peers and his leadership at Scona will not be forgotten. He will always be my special "Mathlete". My heart is breaking as I think of the excrutiating grief that the tragedy of his loss has brought to so many, especially to his family.

To Isaak's family and friends,

My daughter and Isaak were classmates at Strathcona and members of the same graduating class. Alana always spoke of Isaak with warmth and appreciation for his unique and beautiful personality. I had the privilege of hearing Isaak's valediction and seeing the great affection his classmates had for him and their appreciation of his insights. We have made a donaton to the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society to honour Isaak's memory.

With deepest sympathy,

Liz, Alana and David Sawyer
