Kenneth VALENS Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Sep. 23, 2017.
VALENS, Kenneth Ross
It is with heavy hearts, but joyful gratitude for the gift of Ken Valens' life, that we announce his peaceful passing on September 15, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Multiple Systems Atrophy – Cerebellar. Ken will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Carole, Marilyn, John and Lisa, David, Sandra and Jean, Ron and Joan, Roberta, Doreen and Bruce, and Kathleen; grandchildren Kyla and Andrew, Justin, Megan, Bryan and Natalya, Hannah, Jesse, and Angelique; great- grandchildren Nora, Eloise, and Brayden; and all his nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
Ken was predeceased by Louise, Herbert, Edith, John, Charles, Rhoda, and Sarah.
Ken devoted his life to his family, took great delight in his students and fellow colleagues at NAIT, and was deeply appreciative of his new community at St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital. Ken will be remembered by his sense of humour, his ability to see the best in everyone, his biking enthusiasm, hiking adventures, cross country skiing, and his great appreciation for humanity. He will be missed dearly.
Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration will take place in Ken's style (hotdogs over an open fire). The family wishes everyone to celebrate by hugging someone you love, toasting Ken for his love of family and friends, and knowing how appreciative he was of your love. Should you wish to make a memorial donation, Ken would be honoured if you would consider the Mustard Seed Church, Red Cross, or the Food Bank.

Carol and family. We just found out about Ken's passing. We are so thankful for having had the opportunity to share some time with Ken over the years. His constant smile and ever present wit were welcome additions to many shared occasions including our annual killer eggnog celebrations and the Nait Chem Tech ski trips. We have so many great memories of Ken. His painting of my old lobster fishing buddy Nathan Bigney and his pet skunks in River John will be a lasting legacy of his talent and love of life. He was a special person, and did indeed show how to lead a life well lived. Thank you for sharing Ken with us.

Carole and Family The news I received recently of Ken's passing, prompted a flood of memories that reminded me how much the gift of his presence enriched and influenced my life. Ken was a colleague and friend who shared his humour, wisdom, knowledge, experience and friendship freely. His love of life and people shone like rays of sunshine into our days. It was my privilege to have shared office spaces and to have worked together with him as a colleague. Even though our life paths diverged, eventually, for me Ken remains one of those unforgettable persons whose positive influence remains and whose imprint I am thankful to carry!

I wish you and your family didn't have to go through this, but remember that every storm passes - and sunshine and brighter days will follow.

Our thoughts are with Ken's family, he was such a great role model to both his family and the NAIT students and staff. We will always remember his positive attitude and his sense of humour. He was a pioneer in NDT in Alberta.
