The Feniak family: You are in my thoughts and prayers!... I loved Mrs. Feniak, she was a brilliant art teacher. The motion of a paintbrush in her hand influenced all students. That we could compose and express our own art. She made it look so easy and yet so beautifully done. Holding every memory in my heart. God bless!

Feniak Family
Sorry to hear of Pauline's passing and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of your loss. It was a privelige to work with her as a volunteer. Fond memories will put smilies on your faces again soon.

It has been said that it is uncertain if one can teach someone to be an artist, but only provide them with a certain amount of information to help them find their way and make their own choice in terms of the kind of art they will be involved in. If that is true, Pauline Feniak has not only provided the particulars, but has been a gentle guidance and inspiration for all who has come into her presence, art-maker or not.
I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Feniak on my most recent visit back home after an absence of 25 years. During those few hours amid her possessions and a colorful balcony of potted flowers which, I'm sure was her little homage to Monet's garden, we were able to catch up on old times. With her unmistakable poise and serene elegance, she recalled warm memories of my parents courting years and my mother's time as a nursing aid at the George McDougall Hospital back in the 1950's. We looked back on her time as visual art instructor at H.A. Kostash school. She still could recall the assignments and projects I brought to class, many of which I, myself, had forgotten about. But the ones I do remember, I remember fondly, like that one occasion after class when she and I had a private audience with Father Loren as he explained and allowed us to examine several authentic Byzantine Icons he had on loan from a museum or some cathedral in New York. It was moments like those which I am grateful for. They helped shape how, as a visual artist, I look at things, and at life, in general. And for that, I was so happy to be able to thank her personally.
As well, during our visit, we discussed some of the history of the Smoky Lake area and her vision and concern for its future. In brief, she expressed a desire to see an assimilation of the old and the bold, new perspectives and/or approaches to traditions, technologies and agricultural applications that could potentially benefit both town and county. She still liked the idea of "thinking outside the box" without the need to throw the "box" entirely away.
And with that, so too, do I carry a similar frame of reference. I don't think there is one brush stroke, one mark of pen or pencil, one click of camera shutter or computer mouse I have made that hasn't had some impression of her influence. Multi-media artist Laurie Anderson once expressed in one of her performances in regards to the passing of her father that . . . "It was like a whole library had burned down." I'm certain the same can be said for Pauline's passing. And how appropriate that, in these first few weeks of a new school year, we pay reverence to and celebrate a life who has contributed so much to the very definition of what education stands for. Pauline Feniak's life's work will have a lasting impact on all her students, family and friends, no matter where they are, no matter how mindful they may be of it. For we all adhere to her analogous aesthetic of community, of history and . . . of home. And that has been her greatest illustration.
My sincerest condolences to her family.
