James "Jem" Welsh Obituary
James W. (Jem) Welsh, native El Pasoan, was welcomed into the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on December 31, 2018. He was 64 years old. Jem was born in El Paso on December 13, 1954 to John F. Welsh II, and Patricia Belle Humphrey Welsh, who preceded him in death. Jem attended Coronado High School in El Paso TX and graduated Magna cum Laude from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas in 1994. He was a member of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants, and received accreditation as a Certified Nutritional Specialist (CNS), and a Master Professional Private Trainer (MPPT). Jem was a member of the Board of Nutritional Examiners. In 2011 he was inducted in the IPT Hall of Fame having served as Director and Examiner of the Professional Private Trainers Association (PROPTA).
In his early career, Jem worked in his family business, Welsh's Supermarkets of El Paso, then moved to Chicago to become Nutritional Director and Marketing Manager for The Wellness Store from 1995 - 1999. In 1999, Jem established a private practice in San Clemente, CA in Performance Nutrition and Fitness. His practice grew and he opened a larger office and lab in Newport Beach, CA, then later an auxiliary office in Beverly Hills. In his final years, he moved his practice back to El Paso. Jem designed signature programs for high-end clientele that included professional athletes, bodybuilders, models and actors. Jem famously became known as "The Shredder" in performance nutrition circles and "The Professor" in fitness circles. He quickly became the go-to nutritional guru for those in the film and modeling industries with his quick-tone Shred Week originally developed for the red carpet. He held contracts with the William Morris Agency and the Elite and Ford Modeling Agencies.
With growing demand, Jem opened his practice to more clients with an extended group performance program known as The Shred, with close to 3000 participants. He brought his work online and freely shared his knowledge, his unabashed opinions and his own unique, motivational counseling both personally and through social media on his Facebook webpages The Shred and Jem Welsh Nutrition.
Jem passionately served the nutrition and pharmaceutical industries for over 20 years as a concept product formulator and research specialist. He created over 300 nutritional supplements, herbal products and functional food formulations including FitGum™ and ProPax™, a cellular support formula. Jem formulated his own products, CLENZ™, REVZ™ and CUTZ™ a trio of functional beverage powders that he later sold to Food Science of Vermont. His ability to create innovative products and defend their functionality allowed contract manufacturers such as Robinson Pharma, Nutritional Therapeutics, Roex, BioDelivery™ Food Systems, Childcare Nutritionals™ and Medi-Plex Physician's Nutrition Network™ to outsource his intellectual property and translate his concepts into millions of dollars in sales. His products are still widely available today.
Jem loved to write and speak about his passion for wellness. He provided CME and CE unit seminar programs in Nutritional Pharmacology and Companion Nutrition programs to the UCLA Schools of Medicine, USC School of Pharmacy, the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy (Harvard adjunct) among others, instructing pharmacists, physicians, nurses and mid-wives on topics of nutritional supplementation in medical protocol. Jem is published in trade and consumer magazines, newspapers and has many ebooks to his credit.
Jem Welsh was a true pioneer and a long-standing advocate of natural health for those who needed him most. He loved every aspect of the industry from farming to food prep to product creation so his pregnant clients wouldn't develop stretch marks. Jem created a singular niche in his industry, and his clients frequently became his dear friends as his knowledge and commitment to them transformed their lives for the better. He was strong support, a faithful friend, and tremendously loved by those whom he tirelessly served.
Jem is survived by his eldest son Cody Welsh (wife Danielle) of Rohnert Park, CA; his youngest son Jameson Welsh (wife Stephanie) of Boerne, TX along with his seven grandchildren whom he adored - Savannah, Kylee, Cameron, Emmalyn, Savannah, Marlee and Keegan; his step-mother, Mary Welsh of Las Vegas, NV; his sister Jacquelyn Nell Welsh of Las Vegas, NV; his two brothers: Dr. John F. Welsh III (wife Wendy) of Kerrville, TX.; and Joseph Welsh (wife Liliana) of Las Vegas, NV; along with numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. He will be dearly missed among those who knew and cherished him. His remains were cremated by Memorial Pines Cemetery with private family memorial to follow.
