April 12, 1935 – September 10, 2018
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother John E. Douglas, Sr., 83 passed away peacefully on Monday, September 10, 2018 surrounded by family. John was born April 12, 1935 to Raymond and Annie Mae Douglas. A lifelong resident of El Paso, John served faithfully as chairman of the Steward Board for over twenty years at Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church. He currently served on the Board of Directors at Prince of Peace Fellowship until his health did not permit him to continue. Preceded in death by son Christopher T. Douglas (Karen), sister Etta Buchannan, brothers R.B. Douglas, and Lawrence Douglas.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years Jessie Mae Douglas, daughter Carmen E. Carter (Johnnie), son John E. Douglas Jr. (Rachael), sister Violaree Beverly (William), nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
John leaves behind a legacy in law enforcement. He became the highest- ranking black police officer in the history of the El Paso Police Department named to the rank of lieutenant. After retiring from the Police Department, John joined the Sheriff Department under the leadership of Leo Samaniego and was commissioned as Captain and served as jail administrator and Commander of the Criminal Investigation Division. He paved the way for fellow black officers within the department.
He will be dearly missed and leaves behind a lasting impact to those he touched.
