Rolf Dehmel Obituary
Rolf Dehmel of Estes Park, CO, died of natural causes on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. He was 81 years old. Rolf was born in Buffalo, NY, to parents Rudolf and Agatha Bredemeier Dehmel. He grew up in Wauwatosa, WI, where he was a state champion swimmer in the back stroke in high school. The family spent summers at Elkhart Lake, WI, where Rolf refined his swimming prowess. He attended Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, graduating with a B.A. in Economics and matriculating to the US Air Force in 1957, where Rolf served as an officer for four years. He met Mary Lee Craig while serving in the Air Force, and they were married on Cape Cod in September 1960. Soon afterward, Rolf earned his M.B.A. at Harvard Business School, and landed a job as a marketing executive at the Scott Paper Company. Rolf and Mary Lee (Lee) settled in Philadelphia for the next 30 years, raising their three children, Cindy, Craig, and Mark in Media, PA. Rolf worked for various corporations, including National Liberty Insurance, Ridge Homes, Evans Products, and Capital Holdings while in Media as a marketing executive journeyman. From 1972 onward, he and his family spent their summers at Coxton Lake, in Northeastern PA, an idyllic place where Rolf enjoyed his family, as well as pastimes, running, swimming, golfing, sailing, refinishing antiques, and a daily sunset canoe ride with Lee. Rolf was an avid triathlete in his 50's and 60's, competing in numerous events yearly, while training year-round. He had a beautiful singing voice, which he refined as a member of "The Men of Rose Valley" and the Reformation Lutheran Church Choir in Media, PA. When Rolf retired in 1997, he and Lee moved west to Estes Park, in Northern Colorado, near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. In Estes, Rolf became an active member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, where he was on the vestry and sang in their choir. On his pastor's recommendation, Rolf began volunteering at Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park, where he helped organize and sell donated goods to raise money that helped provide for families in need in Larimer County. He volunteered at Crossroads for over 15 years. Rolf also sang with the Oratorio Society for most of his years in Estes Park and worked on the Library Foundation for six years. During the Estes years, Rolf and Lee travelled the world, while splitting time between Estes Park, Coxton Lake, and Palm Desert, CA. Rolf was a devout Christian, dedicated community volunteer, devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and an all-around good person. He lived a good life. Rolf is survived by his wife, Lee Dehmel, daughter Cindy Dehmel Ufer and husband Robert Ufer of Fort Collins, CO and their children Kate and Cara Ufer, son Craig Dehmel and wife Suzanne Dehmel of Los Angeles, CA and their children Chloe and Vienna Dehmel, and son Mark Dehmel and wife Katie Dehmel of Encinitas, CA and their son William Dehmel. There will be a memorial service at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Estes Park on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations in Rolf's memory to Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park, CO and/or St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church.
