Robert Strayer Obituary

Robert Flynn Strayer, affectionately known as Bobby, Grandpa Bob, and Dr. Tickles, of Fairview, Pa., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2020. Bob was surrounded by his beloved wife and children as his valiant battle to overcome heart surgery complications came to an end.

He will especially be remembered for his strength, loyalty, competitive spirit, and sharp wit. Bob had a larger than life presence and his generosity will never be forgotten.

Bob was born on May 24, 1946 to the late Hamilton W. Strayer and Natalie G. Strayer.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his siblings Scott O. Strayer and Ann L. Strayer; and his father-in-law Henry E. Fish.

Bob is survived by his cherished wife Susan Fish Strayer; daughter, Shelby Strayer Roberts and husband Brad; son, Kyle Flynn Strayer and wife Lally; stepson, Jayson A. Yost and wife Hadley; stepdaughter Lindsay L. Turner and husband Ryan; and six adoring grandchildren: John, Samuel, and Zachary Roberts; Brantley and Everett Strayer; and Shire Yost. He is further survived by his siblings Hamilton G. Strayer; Lydia S. Haynor and family; mother-in-law Laurana S. Fish; sister-in-law Dorathea Fish and family; and brother-in-law Henry E. Fish II and family.

Bob's loyalty extended beyond his family and friends. This quality, combined with his competitive spirit, made him an exceptional business leader. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Bob was the President and CEO of ERIE Strayer Company. Founded in 1912, ERIE Strayer is a fourth generation, family owned concrete batch plant manufacturer. During Bob's tenure, his leadership and unrelenting perseverance propelled ERIE Strayer to the top of its industry. Bob served on various boards and worked closely with industry associates including UPMC Hamot Foundation, Manufacturing Association of Erie, American Concrete Pavement Associate, Concrete Plant Manufacturers Bureau and Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. He especially found joy and took pride in working alongside his son, Kyle, over the last ten years. Bob cared tremendously for his ERIE Strayer family and always put them at the forefront of his decisions.

Along with his memberships to the Kahkwa Club, Erie Club and the Erie Yacht Club, he held memberships at the PGA National Sports and Racquet Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and the Powderhorn Country Club in Sheridan, Wyo.

Bob's competitive spirit blossomed at an early age through his love of sports. He played football and tennis during his high school years at both Fairview High School and DeVeaux Academy. Bob continued on as a two sport athlete at Centenary College in Louisiana. Following college, Bob accumulated many amateur tennis championships throughout the tristate area and Canada including winning the Erie City Rec singles championship in '69, '71, '74, and '75. Bob, alongside his first wife Amy Swanson Schmidt, won the Equitable National mixed doubles tournament held during the 1977 U.S. Open.

Bob found relaxation and peace while spending time in Buffalo, Wyoming, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Lake Placid, New York. In Wyoming, he would unwind by fishing on the Big Horn River and while riding horseback. His time in Florida was most enjoyed playing with his grandchildren in the pool, golfing, and meeting with his friends on Worth Avenue. The Adirondack Mountains rejuvenated him with mornings on the dock and boat rides on the lake. Bob took every opportunity to share these meaningful places with friends and family.

Friends may call on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services West Ridge, 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Avenue), and are invited to attend a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.

The family would also like to thank and acknowledge the Cleveland Clinic and its excellent medical care team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a local charity of one's choosing. Covid-19 precautions will be followed by the funeral home as well as the family. In addition, an online guestbook is available and the service will be livestreamed for public viewing on the funeral home Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BurtonFuneralHomesAndCrematoryInc/.

Dear Shelby, Kyle, Jayson and Lindsay,
I was saddened to hear about the passing of your dad/stepdad, and I'm so very sorry that I was unable to be at the viewing yesterday.. Just to be able to see the four of you together, though at a solemn gathering, would have been joyful. I knew Bob way back when and have through the years cherished our relationship. The four of you, in our days at EDS provided even more positive contact. Bob was always gentle, simple, warm and attentive. I recall his early relationship with Amy and the fun they had together at Kakhwa. Amy and I had classes together at Villa Maria College and her tennis spirit surrounded the campus. (I was an adult student at the time.) When he and Susan began their life together, it was like magic . All good. May your blended family carry on his legacy.
Much love to all of you,
Helen Keim-Schneider

Will never forget the good times and many a set played at the WRC.
Was one of original to join the year it opened along with good buddy
Mike Masna. The club had a priceless ambiance. Cannot tell you how much fun it was. A tribute to the Strayer family is in order for bringing this bigger than life facility to the people of Erie to enjoy for generations
I know I did! I actually once met Jimmy Connors at Lakers Game.

Also knew his mother from Weislogel's where I worked because the butchers, Tom & Bill, often had special orders waiting for her.

Bob too had a bigger than life presence. So much for his family, and for Erie, to be proud of! He will never be forgotten!

I extend my sincerest heart felt condolences to the prominent Strayer
family of Erie, Pa. on your tragic loss.
