Margaret Schaeffer Thomas
Mrs. Margaret Schaeffer Thomas, 95, of Country Club Road in Eufaula, died at home, January 13, 2021, after an extended illness. She was a native of Clopton, Alabama and a long-time resident of Eufaula, Alabama. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eufaula. She graduated from Dale County High School, and Troy State University with a bachelor's degree in Childhood Education. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught third grade, fifth grade, and first grade for the Eufaula City Schools for 35 years. Following her retirement, she owned and operated "Miss Margaret's" Kindergarten for five years. Beginning in her childhood, her love of children and her desire to teach them were motivating forces in her life.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Claude A. Schaeffer, Jr. and Sim A. Thomas; brothers, Wesley Lavert Roberts, and Ralph Roberts. She is survived by her sons Claude Schaeffer, III of Eufaula, Charlie (Anne) Schaeffer of Eufaula; two grandsons Jim (Arabella) Schaeffer of Birmingham, and Wes (Kaitlin) Schaeffer of Birmingham; great grandson Charlie Schaeffer, and great granddaughter Allie James Schaeffer; one step-daughter Virginia Thomas McDorman of Birmingham.
The Schaeffer Family would like to express their deep appreciation to a special group of home caregivers for their devotion, kindness, and patience for the past several years: Joyce Blount, Theresa Chitty, Zina Williams, Sylvia Flowers, and Kim Hill. They also express their sincere thanks to the kind nurses and staff at Kindred Hospice, as well as the staff at The Gardens of Eufaula.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 17th at 2:00PM at First United Methodist Church of Eufaula, with Rev. Alan Cassady officiating, and Chapman Funeral Home directing. Visitation shall begin prior to the service at 1:15PM. Social distancing precautions shall be required.
Serving as pall bearers shall be James Earnest Ransom, Billy Lawrence, Richard Wingate, Lance Abbott, Shannon Rasberry, Jim Thomas and Dr. Ed Richardson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that consideration be given to The First United Methodist Church of Eufaula Building Fund or The Eufaula Heritage Association.
