John Carr Obituary

CONCORD, NC John Kenley "Ken" Carr, formerly of Winchester, Va., died peacefully on March 14, 2013. Ken was born on May 21, 1925 in Hagerstown, Md., to the late Clifton Garfield Carr and Louisa Shanabrook Hartman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Marian Alice Wendler Carr, and a grandson, Andrew Scott Carr McKay. Ken graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1943 and was senior class president. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during WWII as an assistant navigation instructor and B29 navigator. After WWII, he continued to serve as a U.S. Army reservist until his retirement in 1967 as Major. In 1950, he graduated from Gettysburg College with a BA in Physics. He returned to his alma mater as an instructor of Physics, Meteorology, and Astronomy for three years. In 1954, Ken joined the manufacturing division of Doubleday Book Publishing Company in Hanover. He moved to Virginia in 1956 to help start up Doubleday's Berryville plant. For the next 30 years, he served in various management positions including plant superintendent, plant manager, vice-president warehousing and distribution, and senior vice-president warehousing and distribution when he retired in 1987. He came out of retirement in 1988 to work for the Frederick-Winchester Service Authority as its first executive director for seven years. Ken was a gifted teacher, champion golfer, and an avid hunter and fly fisherman. He cherished his friendship with his golfing buddies and the guys of Devil's Den Hunting Lodge and Codorus Creek Fishing Club. He was an active and long-time member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Trustees and church council. He was particularly proud of his work with and participation on the Patient Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, he served on the boards of The Bank of Clarke County, F&M Bank, and the National Lutheran Home. Ken is survived by three loving and devoted daughters (and spouses), Carol Carr McKay (Ian Hardin) of Athens, Ga., Tracey Carr Rossman (John) of Concord, N.C., and Dr. Constance Carr Houk of Warrenton, Va.; grandchildren, Christopher McKay, Arthur McKay, Kenley Rossman, Bunny Houk, Eva Houk, Wesley Houk, Christopher Rossman (Tiffany), Chad Rossman (Whitney), Kelly Floyd (Chad), and great-grandchildren Jack and Stella. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staffs of The Laurels of Highland Creek, Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast, Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis, and Home Instead Senior Care of Winchester, VA and Concord, NC for their care and dedicated service to Ken and his family. Memorials may be made to the Gettysburg College "Ken Carr Memorial" at Office of Annual Giving, 300 N. Washington Street, Gettysburg College, Box 423, Gettysburg, PA 17325; or to the American Red Cross "Ken Carr Memorial" at Top of Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, 561 Fortress Drive, Winchester, VA 22603. A memorial service will be held at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, Va., on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. The family will receive guests before the service at 1:15 p.m. Inhumation of the ashes will take place after the service at Mount Hebron Cemetery. To Tracey, Carol, Constance and your families, On behalf of the members of Devil's Den Sportsmens' Association, I would like to extend our deepest condolences on Ken's passing.
