Margaret Burcham

ORRTANNA Margaret Heyser Burcham, 89, died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at The Village of Laurel Run. Born August 8, 1924, in Arlington County, Virginia, Margaret was the daughter of the late Elmer & Beulah (Seylar) Heyser. She was predeceased by her husband, Willie M. Burcham who died in 2009. Margaret graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1943 and received her nursing training at Warfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. She served proudly with the U.S. Army Nursing Corp during World War II. Margaret was a women of many talents, for many years she served as a nurse at the Gettysburg Hospital, but to her it was still Annie M. Warner Hospital. She was a member of the hospital nurses group, The Ding-a-Lings, and enjoyed many years working with this dedicated group. After retiring from nursing, she worked for the Adams County Drug & Alcohol Group. Margaret ran the Hemlock Inn for several years after her parents retired, helped her daughter Kathy with her restaurant and her daughter Sally at the Cashtown Inn. She enjoyed the farm she and her late husband owned in Buchanan Valley, and you would see her out working during apple season sorting apples and assisting in any way she could help. Margaret was a former board member of the Gettysburg Area School District, Survivors, Inc., and the local Hospice organization. She was involved with Visiting Nurse Association, American Business Women Association and was involved with the start up of the Buchanan Valley Fire Department. Margaret loved her family, after the death of her mother Beulah, she became the matriarch of the Heyser Clan. On many weekends, you would find her farm house full of kids, enjoying their time on the farm with their beloved grandmother, she will be dearly missed by her family. Survivors include her three daughters; Pamela Hurlbert and husband David of Cashtown, Sally Rosensteel and husband James of Orrtanna, and Kathy Bragg and her partner Greg Bonebrake of New Oxford, her foster child, Roann Kuykendall, five grandchildren, Seth Hurlbert and wife Rebecca, Bekah Hurlbert and fiance Dean Tanner, Amey Cejas and husband Jorge, Trevor and Danny Rosensteel, one great grandson, Julian Cejas and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her eight siblings; Janet Stansbury, Nancy Orner, Charles, Jr., Lewis, Stephen, Robert, Frederick and William Heyser. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. from the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA with Pastor Kenneth R. W. Reid, officiating. Burial will be next to her husband in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
