NEW OXFORD John W. "Pop" Spangler, Sr., 83, passed peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at home with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Gladys J. (Weaver) Spangler for 63 years. Born July 21, 1931, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Claude L. and Olive E. (Slagle) Spangler. John was a very active member of Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, Hanover. He volunteered as a cook at many of their activities and also helped with Meals on Wheels and the Hanover Area Council of Churches. Mr. Spangler was employed for more than 25 years with Hanover Concrete prior to retiring in 1993. He later worked as a "people greeter" for Wal Mart for a number of years. Pop was a true dog lover and regularly transported donations of food to the Adams Co. SPCA. He enjoyed going to the mountains with his family and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pop is also survived by six children, Jane Hull and her husband Preston of Spring Grove, Rodney Spangler and his wife Karen of Hanover, John Spangler, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Hanover, Diane Kuhn and her husband Dave of New Oxford, Bill Spangler and his wife Donna of McSherrystown and Angela Smith and her partner Craig Funk of Mt. Holly Springs; three sisters, Jean Hess of Gettysburg, Shirley Mummert of Spring Grove and Pat Prato of Spring Grove; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his son, Joe Spangler. A service to celebrate the life of John W. "Pop" Spangler will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 21 at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, 1398 Moulstown Road, Hanover, with the Rev. David Delong officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA and again on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Spangler, Jr., Bob Hull, Curt Hess, Sam Weaver, Ashley Smith and Scott Mummert.
