Dr. Richard Dean Nunneley, Jr., 56, a former resident of Bartlesville and a resident of Sioux City, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 23, 2010, following accidental fall in his home.
Dick was born on December 26, 1953 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the son of Richard Nunneley, Sr., and Mary Ruth (Metzinger) Nunneley. He was reared in Tulsa and received his education at Sts. Peter and Paul School, Cascia Hall Preparatory School and graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1971.
He received a Phillips 66 Scholarship and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1974. He taught at Claremore Junior College (now Rogers State University) until his marriage to Judith "Judy" Ann Stone on May 10, 1980 in Tulsa. They made their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Dick pursued his education, obtaining his Master of Arts degree in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education and his Doctorate degree in Education Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Minnesota until July 1, 2010, when he moved to Sioux City, Iowa and began his employment at Morningside College as he Dean of the Graduate Studies Department.
He had for many years, played in several Blue Grass bands in Oklahoma and Minnesota and was a talented musician, playing mandolin and other instruments and writing music.
Dick is survived by his parents, Richard Dean Nunneley, Sr., and Mary Ruth (Metzinger) Nunneley of Bartlesville; his brother, Michael Ray Nunneley (Kathy), of Mannford, Oklahoma; his sister, Mary Kathleen Nunneley Godwin (Ronald R.) of Derby, Kansas; his former wife, Judith "Judy" Stone Nunneley, of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by his nephews: Bradley Nunneley (Kari) and their daughter, Kylie of McCloud, Oklahoma; Kyle Nunneley (Heidi) of Woodward, Oklahoma; Benjamin L. Godwin of Hutchinson, Kansas; Jordan Godwin of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and his nieces, Sarah Elizabeth Godwin of Bartlesville, and Ashley Godwin Algrim (Kirk) of Talala, Oklahoma.
Many other family members, friends and associates who mourn his passing include dear friends, Julie Kalnin and her daughters, Renata and Isabel Kalnin of Oregon and Robert and Margaret Curry of Lawrence, Kansas who were with Dick in Sioux City at the time of his accident and have been so helpful to our family.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 28, 2010 in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Drumright, Oklahoma with interment next to his grandparents, Raymond and Mabel (Mitchem) Metzinger. Rev. John R. Metzinger, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in Edmond, Oklahoma as officiant. Funeral arrangements and interment are under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory in Bartlesville.
