William Evans-Smith Obituary

PINEHURST - Retired Col. William "Bull" Evans-Smith, of Pinehurst, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in St. Joseph of the Pines. He was born June 7, 1920, in Maplewood, N.J., to the late Phillip and Fannie Evans-Smith. He graduated from Rutgers University and was a member of Chi Si Fraternity. Entering the U.S. Army after graduation, he served 35 years, retiring as a colonel. He was an attaché in Moscow, a Green Beret at Fort Bragg, where he was a commander of Special Forces. During his career, he served in Japan, Turkey and Vietnam, as well as various stateside deployments. Upon retirement from the Army, he accepted a position at American University, where he produced Foreign Area Studies Handbooks for the military, retiring after 20 years. Mr. Evans-Smith was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Barbara Houchin Evans-Smith; and three brothers, Norman, Leonard and Ira. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Mare; three daughters, Bronwyn (Ronnie) of Litchfield, Conn., Dr. Wyndolyn (Lynnie) Tetlow of Upper Michigan, and Leslie Cook of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; two special grandchildren, Wendy (Tetlow) Rufo of Landsdown, Va., and Theodore Tetlow of New York; four additional grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice.
