Bruce Stumbras Obituary

Bruce Stumbras

Orlando, FL - Bruce Stumbras passed away peacefully with family at his side on Monday April 9th in Orlando Florida.

A "work hard, play hard" individual, Bruce loved his wife and family, his friends and his Lord. Bruce has a passion for coaching, mentoring, and counseling whether it was on a sports field or in a workplace, and he cherished his memories of the people he coached and worked with throughout his life.

Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on October 29, 1939, he later moved to Fond du Lac and graduated from St Mary's Springs in 1958, before attending culinary school. In what Bruce would deem the best decision of his life, he married his high-school sweetheart Margaret Timblin.

Bruce and Margaret spent their early life in the hospitality industry, working in Bruce's parents' restaurant, the Hob Nob Supper Club, and later in their own restaurants, including Chef Chateau and Samantha's. They later relocated to Florida where Bruce engaged in the real estate development industry; moving ultimately to Orlando, where service with the Church took on new meaning. Bruce served with great distinction as the St. Vincent DePaul Council President from 2004 - 2010. Under his watch, numerous initiatives were launched and the Prison Ministry Program, which will continue to serve the community well after Bruce's death, remained his proudest accomplishment.

Bruce and Margaret lost their first child, Shawn Stumbras, to cancer in June of 2003. In his final days, Bruce was particularly looking forward to catching up with Shawn. In addition to Margaret, Bruce is survived by his brother, Jerome Stumbras and spouse Nancy, residing in North Carolina; Shawn's spouse, Mary Beth, residing is Chicago, Illinois; son, Steven Stumbras and spouse Julie, residing in Madison Wisconsin; daughter Sulyn Gruber and spouse Kurt, residing in Orlando, Florida; and daughter Sheryl Stumbras, residing in Maputo, Mozambique. Bruce is also survived by a group of extraordinary grandchildren: Davin, Trevor, Kyle, Michael, Erin, Sarah, Veronica, Bridget, Lyndsay, Adam, Paul and Vaughn, who will ensure Bruce's sprit of service and community lives on.

A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Saturday, April 14th at 11:00am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Orlando. Monsignor William Ennis will officiate.

In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul Orlando, c/o St. Peter Claver Conference, by check sent to 770 S OBT Apopka, FL 32703, or online at SVDPOrlando.org. Use donation link and note in memory of Bruce Stumbras.

Bruce used to be the hour before me at perpetual adoration and I always enjoyed talking to him. He was inspiring to me for his dedication to his faith and his unrelenting work with the poor and neglected. He is the embodiment of what true Christian faith is. Holy Family will miss him deeply. May he rest in peace. My prayers are with the entire Stumbras family. God Bless.

The Stumbras family is in my thoughts and prayers. My parents loved the Hob Nob and our family spent many great evenings there. Bruce, may you be reunited with Shawn in Heaven. God bless you.

Bruce was a wonderful friend but more importantly, the hands and feet of Christ to so many he touched throughout his ministry in St. Vincent de Paul and St. Peter Claver.

He will be deeply missed by all of us who had the great good fortune to know him. He leaves us a legacy of love and kindness for the poor and the neglected, that he so fervently ministered to and to all of us that he supported in our work of ministering to the poor.

As a child I remembered many wonderful meals, with my parents at the 'Hob Nob'.
Mr. Stumbras was always welcoming and the food exquisite. Prayers to you and yours at this time. It was an honor to know him.

Bruce was ahead of his time as a chef and restauranteur. I always knew him as a hard working gentleman alongside Margaret. And the Stumbras house parties that took place are those of legend...whether or not Bruce and Margaret were aware, or not. You could tell a loving family lived at their address. I recall Bruce always at the athletic events of sons Shawn and Steven, cheering and coaching. Bruce left his mark, not everyone can say that...and my thoughts are with the "Stummy" family.
