Adrian Ford Obituary

Leominster

Adrian Lamont Ford, 73 died on Saturday, January16, 2021 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster, MA suddenly after a brief illness.

Adrian was born in New Castle, PA on February 28, 1947, the son of Leo Gilbert Ford and Primma Rosebud (Thompson) Ford Mahone but he was loved and raised by his stepfather Doc Mahone. He lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts since 1966.

Adrian graduated from New Castle, Pa. high school. Adrian's undergraduate studies include Mount Wachusett Community College and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has a bachelor's degree in Human Services along with a Master's Degree in Community Economic Development from New Hampshire University Graduate School of Business.

Adrian was a civil rights and community activist championing the causes of racial equality and social and economic justice. He founded the Fitchburg chapter of Three Pyramids Community and Economic Development Corporation in 1971. In 1972 he became the Chief Executive Officer of the state-wide agency, a position he continued to hold until he passed. In 1973 Three Pyramids received a grant from the Episcopal Church of New York to provide relief supplies and support to soldiers in West Africa fighting for their country's freedom. Adrian worked at the United Nations with Ambassadors of other nations to coordinate grants. Adrian showed courage and worked tirelessly to "speak truth to power" to address the injustices that result from systemic and institutional racism.

In 1992, Adrian co-founded the North Central Massachusetts Minority Coalition, better known as The Minority Coalition, which is a multicultural and multi- sector collaborative working for racial, gender and economic equity in the North Central Region. Adrian produced and hosted "Freedom Means" Three Pyramids "UPI" Award Winning Radio Program since 1974. He hosted the network as well as public access television programs. He was a columnist for the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper. He served as a consultant, writer, and trainer to a wide variety of public and private policy officials, educators, businesses, and neighborhood groups.

Three Massachusetts governors appointed Adrian to some of the state's highest level policy boards including Education Reform, Workforce Development, School-to-Work, and Business and Economic Development.

In the early 1990's Adrian was hired as the first Executive Director for the Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) which is the state association of the 23 Community Action Agencies. He was a longtime consultant for the local Community Action Agency, MOC, providing training and technical assistance in the areas of racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Adrian was honored for his contributions to Massachusetts communities in a variety of ways, including being named one of Fitchburg State College's 100 Most Historically Influential Leaders during the college's 100th Anniversary Celebration in 1994. Adrian was instrumental in the establishment of the City of Fitchburg's Human Rights Commission serving until his passing.

Adrian loved to read, the value of learning was so important to him, he also loved hiking and the ocean. Adrian was very active, walking daily, climbing Mount Monadnock many times and taking visits regularly to Cape Cod. Most important to Adrian was spending time with his children and family; the people he loved the very most.

Adrian is survived by his wife Donna-Jean Ford and his children; Adrian L. Ford, Jr. and his wife Jessie, Robert Reyes, Maya Ford-Diaz and her husband Ricardo, Kahlil Ford, all of Fitchburg; and Shelia Proctor of Leominster.

Please accept my sympathy and may Adrian rest in perfect peace. I grew up and graduated from High School in New Castle, Pa. We were very good friends. I am heartbroken to hear of his death. Adrian always had a quiet gentle manner and he always had ideas and concepts that he liked to discuss. He enjoyed a good laugh and we shared some good times. I will certainly miss my dear friend.

I would like to offer my condolences and prayers to Adrian´s entire family. May God eternally surround you with His presence of peace and comfort. Adrian was one of the most influential African-American men in Massachusetts. His monumental work in establishing the first Black non-profit community action agency in Fitchburg proved to be a catalyst for the emotional and social well being of the community, as well as, the economic development for thousands of people of color in North Central Massachusetts. As a result of his leadership and wisdom I personally found acceptance within a community of my peers, an education for future success, my first job, and `family´ among his family. A great commander has completed his tour of duty, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.
Rest In Peace.

Adrian was a strong supporter of the kids and families from the College Neighborhood and Ward 5B. He was a voice for the time and he pushed many agendas forward that might have otherwise gone silent.

I first met Adrian in the summer of 1971. We were both inpatients at the former Burbank Hospital when there was no cable television in the room we shared, and patients actually stayed in the hospital to be observed for a few days of recuperation rather than being sent home with a prescription for pain relievers.
We passed most of our unoccupied time complaining about the hospital food, trying to amuse the female nursing-students, or simply talking about our lives with one another.
My first impression of Adrian was that he was a friendly and charismatic roommate who was very enthusiastic about and seriously dedicated to the recently founded Fitchburg chapter of the Three Pyramids, which happened to be located in a building on Day Street where I played youth basketball in the early 1960's for the Moran Square Diner team.
Other than that coincidence, the only thing Adrian and I had in common to talk about was a novice interest in politics, and I recall hearing about a soon to become famous Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress, for the first time from him.
When she announced her candidacy for president a couple of months after Adrian and I first met, he contacted me about working on her campaign; however, I declined having already volunteered to campaign for George McGovern.
We didn't speak again until 1988. I was working in the Office of the Mayor for Jeff Bean, who assigned me meet and assist Adrian who was leading a statewide non-discrimination group supporting the human rights of persons inflicted with HIV/AIDS.
He was a selfless and fearless proponent, not only willing to advocate for less fortunate individuals who most people were keeping their social distance from during that period, but also someone I personally observed was willing greet HIV/AIDS afflicted people with a handshake and embrace them with a hug when saying goodbye - and successfully encouraged me to do the same.
"Small gestures go a long way," he said. RIP
