Mrs. Longley, native of Charlotte, born January 30, 1937, died peacefully February 26, 2013, surrounded by family, after a battle with metastatic melanoma.
Mrs. Longley was the eldest of five daughters of the late Reynard Dowd and Mary Beatrice May: Linda Whicker (Denver, NC); Judy Sessoms (North Wilkesboro, NC); Joyce Chambers and husband Cory (Salem, SC), and Virginia White (deceased). Peggy was married to Dr. Richard Toler (deceased), the father of a daughter, Sherri Toler Murrell (husband Duncan), Pittsboro, NC, and Richard Toler, Jr. (wife Crista), Charlotte. Grandchildren are Caroline Murrell, Sarah Anne Murrell and Brody Toler. In 2008, she was married to Dr. Samuel Longley from Melbourne, FL, who survives her. Two children of a former marriage of Dr. Longley are: Samuel Longley, Jr. (wife Ann), Walnut Creek, CA and Missy Haynes (husband Dennis), Melbourne, FL. Grandchildren are Cody and Kelly Haynes, and Samantha Longley. Mrs. Longley graduated from West Mecklenburg High School, attended Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN.
She took classes at CPCC where she was also employed for 18 years and retired in 2003 to enjoy time with her grandchildren. Peggy treasured the positions she held at CPCC and her years working there were highlights of her career. Mrs. Longley joined the Sharon Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1950 and continued to be an involved member since then serving for many years as church treasurer, member and chair of the finance committee and a member of the church board. She especially loved travel and made several trips to Europe over the years. She and Sam were fortunate to travel with family and friends. Their travel included two transatlantic cruises which were the highlights of her travel and years with Sam. She was a novice golfer and enjoyed trying until she was unable to play after she was diagnosed with melanoma in January 2012.
A memorial service for Mrs. Longley will be held at the Sharon Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 920 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, 28211, NC, on Saturday, March 16, at 3:00 pm. Her family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.

Peggy was my first cousin who I reconnected with a year ago when my mother died. I enjoyed the time we spent at lunch, laughing and reminiscing about family times together so much and meeting you Sam. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

In many ways Peggy was my mentor when I started my career at CPCC. May you rest in piece dear Peggy, and say hello to Victor Brown who can show you the ropes in heaven.

I was truly sad to hear of this news today. I worked with Peggy at CPCC and when we weren't talking about work we were talking about her family and the adventures she had taken or was about to take. What a beautiful legacy she has left to each of us that knew her. May God bless her family with peace and comfort during this difficult time.
