John Butler Obituary


John B. Butler died in his home Saturday, October 6, 2012, age 96. He was born in New Dorp, Staten Island, New York City. He moved to Brevard County from Wyckoff NJ in July 1975.

Mr. Butler was a decorated Army veteran of World War II, serving in the defense of Hawaii and the occupation of Japan. Excerpts of his diary of the occupation of Japan were featured in Florida Today at the 50th anniversary of VJ day, in 1995. Mr. Butler was retired from IBM where he worked in various managerial capacities for thirty years. During his time with IBM he also served the US Government Bureau of Census, and Departments of Labor and Commerce.

On Staten Island he founded and was President of a community organization, the Manor Civic Association. In Satellite Beach he served as President of the Moorings Association and, for two years, as President of AARP Satellite Beach Chapter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Perry Butler.

He is survived by his daughter, Diane Marie; his son, John Jr.; daughter-in-law, Katherine Whitehouse; grandchild-ren, Sarah (Paul) Jessen, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Everitt, and David Butler; and great grandchildren, Lily and Sam Jessen.

Burial will be in The Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. Funeral services will be private.
