Gloria "Lali" Hooper Obituary

Gloria E. Hooper, "Lali", adored wife and mother, beloved grandmother, teacher, supporter, heroine, inspiration and number one fan and matriarch of our family, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the William Childs Hospice House. She was 70. She is now embraced in the ever-loving arms of God and is surrounded by a host of angels.

Gloria will be greatly missed by her husband, Russ; her two daughters, Kathi and Kerry; her sons-in-law, Rob and Cort; and her four beautiful granddaughters, Madi, Sara, Anna and Eva.

Gloria was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 22, 1942. She married her " honeycito", Russ, in 1969, and moved with him to Maryland, New York, and finally settled in Florida in 1988. She worked as a secretary for many years, but her focus was ministering to her family and friends as a classroom mom, scout leader, religious ed. teacher, community volunteer and "adopted" grandma to the children of her daughters' friends.

She enthusiastically attended the many sporting, music, and dramatic arts performances of her granddaughters, and loved teaching them Spanish and traditional Puerto Rican recipes. She enjoyed playing Bingo with her Hispanic Bingo Club and joining Russ at events at the Melbourne Elks.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community and often joined her Hispanic friends at Our Lady of Lourdes. Wherever she went, she made many friends and was truly loved.

Gloria will be remembered for her positive attitude, her charitable heart, her unwavering faith in God, her determination and spirit, her real life funny stories ("Oh! Gloria did another Gloria Hooper!"), her delight in performing random acts of kindness, and the guidance and wisdom she gave us all. We are confident that she is in heaven laughing with her many family and friends, including her "little" brother, Papote, and granddaughter, Caroline.

We would like to thank the staff at the William Childs Hospice House, and the many doctors, nurses and technicians who cared for Gloria over the last 24 years, especially Dr. Charles Stewart, Dr. Tony Barille, Dr. Ralph Vicari, Dr. Dan Segina and Dr. Peter Gilbert. Their compassion, guidance and perseverance will never be forgotten.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 29, at 10:30 am, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic; reception will follow in the Life Center.

Per Gloria's adamant request, please do not send flowers. Instead, please consider a donation to the Brevard Rescue Mission, Inc., PO Box 204, Cocoa, FL 32923.
