Monique Baran

Penn Yan–Monique Baran, 66, passed away on Monday (May 28, 2018).

A celebration of her life is to be arranged in late June. Monique followed the teachings of Eckankar, the path of light and sound.

The family has requested memorial contributions be directed to Catholic Charities at 121 E.Elm St. in Penn Yan, or the Arc of Yates, 235 North Avenue, Penn Yan, NY 14527.

Monique was born on May 27, 1952 in Fouchy, France, the daughter of the late John and Olga (Emelianova) Baran. Monique spoke four languages fluently. She earned a B.A. from SUNY Oswego in 1974 and from Albany State University in 1978 with a Master's Degree, both in Russian language and literature. She also studied at Moscow University in 1975 and at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. Monique did two tours with the Peace Corps in the late 1970s in Gabon and Ghana, where she taught English and French, respectively. She was an office administrator and accountant in her husband's practice, homemaker and loving mother. Monique was on the Board of Directors of the Arc of Yates, and volunteered with the Arc of Yates bowling league. She loved to tango and polka, practice tai chi, travel and Turner Classic movies.

Monique is survived by her husband, Dr. Nicholas Loan, whom she married August 11, 1984; daughters Nina Loan of Penn Yan and Carol Loan of Brooklyn; sister, Veronica Royal; and nieces and nephews Elizabeth McCoy, John Paul and Natalie Royal, Liam, Ilyena and Kate Kozain, Joseph and Nick Loan and Danika Sarner.

In keeping with her generous nature, she donated her body to New York Chiropractic College for anatomical study.
