BETTY STEIN Obituary

BETTY EDLAVITCH STEIN, 102, educator, writer and Indiana progressive thinker, passed away on Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, peacefully in her home. Born in 1916, four years before the first commercial radio station started to broadcast, she observed and participated in more than a century of immense and constant change. One of her favorite conversation topics was to review all the discoveries and improvements in the past hundred years and try to figure out which was the best. Born in Fort Wayne, Betty graduated from Central High School at the age of 16. Educated as a social worker at Ohio State University, Betty became engaged in education as her children progressed through public schools. When they were in college, she earned a master's degree from Saint Francis College and began to teach. When forced to retire because of some silly age rule, Betty and FWCS found a way around that. For the next 30-plus years she worked as a consultant to the magnet program at Memorial Park Middle School, retiring reluctantly a few years ago to enjoy her golden years. For 35 years her columns graced the pages of the News-Sentinel, the best of which recently appeared in her book "By The Way". She loved the recent book signings where she had the opportunity to chat with many former readers. Betty was a dedicated community servant her entire lifetime, as long as the meetings weren't early in the morning. Active as a volunteer for most of her adult life, she served on many boards and commissions, shattering glass ceilings along the way. She was the first woman to be elected to the board and to be elected president of the board of trustees at Congregation Achduth Vesholom. She was also the first woman appointed to the Police Merit Commission, the first woman to serve as chairperson of the Board of Safety, and the first woman to serve on the Allen County Alcoholic Beverage Commission (which she ultimately chaired and served on for 20 years). She held leadership positions on the boards of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Friends of the Library, and the Allen County Public Library Building Corporation. This only scratches the surface of her accomplishments. And naturally you cannot be that busy without others noticing. She received many prestigious accolades over the years as well, including the Sagamore of the Wabash Award presented by the Governor of Indiana and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of St. Francis. She is being honored in August as a Hoosier Jewish Legend by the Indiana Jewish Historical Society. She is survived by her children, John Stein and Rena (Don) Black; granddaughters, Lisa (Scott) Fybush, Wendy Stein, Susan (Patty) Engle and Lisa Engle Aichele; great-grandchildren, (and boy she did think they were great!) Ari and Eli Fybush and Libby and Christian Aichele; former daughter-in-law, Fran Adler; step-granddaughter, Janet Black, and several extended family members and friends like family. A private graveside service for family will precede a community memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, at Congregation Achduth Vesholom, 5200 Old Mill Rd., celebrating the life of Betty Stein, educator, reader, writer and friend to all. Calling is from from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, and from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, at Congregation Achduth Vesholom. Memorials may be made to Heartland Sings! Memorial Park Opera Fund and Congregation Achduth Vesholom Holocaust Education fund, "or just ask someone to tell you about a book they're reading. She'd like that."

I so loved Betty Stein! I was thinking of her today, as I folded sheets. She had a specific way she wanted her sheets folded, and I was always striving to figure out how to do it. I loved taking her to the Fresh Market , where the employees were so kind to her.
She always looked so stylish.
Love to you...

When I worked at Stein Advertising, the day was always a little brighter when Betty would stop by. My mother would always let me know when Betty had an article in the paper. She was such a blessing to all of us and had so much knowledge as well as common sense to share. Until we meet again.....

Mrs. Stein was my teacher back when Fairfield was a junior high school. She was absolutely the best teacher I've ever had and has served as a role model for me since the time she was my teacher. While her passing saddens so many, we can all take comfort in her legacy. She touched so many lives throughout her careers.

Betty Stein touched many, many lives during her long and productive life. I remember Mrs Stein from my years at Fairfield Jr High back in the middle 70's. She truly devoted her life to educating, not only youth, but everyone. RIP Mrs Stein

"Betty Stein, that gal of mine!" is how I greeted her when Laura Weston introduced us decades ago in the News-Sentinel library, and just like that we were fast friends. Betty is one of the greatest people I've ever known. I cannot believe I'm lucky enough to have been her friend. Her wit, wisdom and love live on in all of us. She'll never stop making me a better person and making this world a better place.

I knew "Aunt Betty" starting in 1970. She was a legend and a woman to look up to. I have always admired her. She lived a most remarkable life. I wish you peace and strength in accepting her death. May the many memories you have be a blessing for you all.

I had the priviledge of having Mrs. Stein as my 9th grade English Teacher at Fairfield Jr. High. I don't think any of any of her students will ever forget her adage that a and lot are two words! She was a wonderful teacher! I remember seeing her in the hallway at school one day; I must have been looking down at the floor. Mrs Stein stopped me and told me to hold my head up high, be proud of who I am....I've never forgotten her kind words to a shy teenager....

I had the pleasure of meeting Betty when I was employed by Curtis Stein, Inc. of Stein Companies. I had worked there for fours years. I always thought highly of Betty and enjoyed reading about her in the newspapers. Betty lived a long and ful life. She was very well educated and loved to pass that on to whom she ever met. God be with her family, especially John and Rena, during this difficult time. Cherish your mom's memories forever.

One year she was designated Fort Wayne's Citizen of the Year, it could have been of the decade or a lifetime achievement award...it should have been. She was a pure gem. Happily, through her kids and grands she has left us all gifts that will remind us of just a few of the superlatives that describe Betty.

Mrs. Stein told me to call her Betty, when we re-met after I was an adult. That was a challenge for me, but I was able to do it after a while. I had the privilege to drive her to school or take her to the Fresh Market many times in the last few years. I drove her to school on her very last day... I loved our conversations about books and life. She was my teacher for 2 years at Fairfield Middle School in 1971-72. I never forgot her, and always admired her. She stayed up with current events until the end of her life. When I visited her last, she was watching the Mueller hearings and reading the paper! Hurray for her. She made sure that I knew she was 102 and a half!
I miss you already, Betty! A true inspiration.

John and Rena I am so sorry for your loss but what an amazing life your mom had! To my sisters and brother, she was always Aunt Betty and to my parents, she and your dad, Uncle Curt, were great friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I will always remember Aunt Betty fondly!

I had Mrs. Stein at Fairfield In 1971-1972. When she read my name and saw my last name she said,"oh no not another Schwalm." I laughed and fell in love with her in that moment. My dad died in Jan of that year and taking her citizenship class helped me through one of the roughest times of my life. I have never forgot you dear Mrs. Stein. Thank you for giving so much of yourself to all of us students that you touched. May God bless you and your family. Much love.

Best teacher I ever had. She made English class fun. I was having a tough time in typing class and when she walked by after school was out, she came in the room and gave me a big hug and said to keep on trying !! She sat down and helped me type and I did make it !! Wonderful teacher !! Will always remember her for caring about all students and her kindness !!!
