DANIEL KENT THIEL, 79, of Garrett, Ind., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018. Born in Fort Wayne, Dan wa sa son of the late Lewis Thiel and Valera Opliger. He was a North Side High School graduate, a marine reserve for eight years and a NIPSCO serviceman for 34 years. Dan and his wife, Mary lived in a saltbox house in the woods that they built together. He was a quiet man who wrote poetry, told a good story, thought about life and his fellow man. His wit and humor will be missed by his family. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Kahn); son, Dan Jr. (Karen); daughter, Denise (Mark) Cleveland; grandchildren, Courtney (Dameon) Rinehold, Whitney Cleveland, Derek Thiel, and Wade (Emily) Thiel; great-grandson, Corbin Rinehold; and siblings, Jon (Margaret) Thiel, Sara (Dick) Conrow, Dave (Barb) Thiel, and Becky (Gwen) Shedd. Dan was also preceded in death by his brother, Rick (Betty) Thiel. A celebration in his honor is 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, at the American Legion Post 178, 515 W. 5th Ave, Garrett, Ind.
