MARY M. KOVACH, 100, passed to her heavenly destination on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018. Born on Jan. 6, 1918 in South Bend, Mary was a daughter of Karl and Johanna (Buzol ich) Derdak. She was the third of four siblings. Mary was a homemaker and assisted her husband operating Charlie's Tavern. She was also a member of the former St. Anthony Society Ladies Auxiliary. On Jan. 19, 1946 she married Charles A. "Crab" Kovach. He died on April 26, 1981. She is survived by her daughter, Judith (John) Stenger; grandchildren, Cynthia Stenger, Lisa (Joseph) Thomas, Jennifer (David) Zent, and Kristen (Brian) Hirsch; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mary was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Szauer; and two brothers Victor Derdak and John Derdak. A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at St. Anthony de Padua Church, 2320 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, where family and friends may gather from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony de Padua Catholic School. Zahoran Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
