Jane Madey Obituary

Jane Mary Madey (Gunn) passed away in Charlottesville, VA on January 14, 2016 surrounded by family. She led an inspired life based on kindness, exuberance, and close friendships. She was 77 years old and died from complications due to brain cancer. Jane was a stylish and creative woman, with abounding energy and the wonderful ability to connect with just about anyone. There was never a dull moment with Jane (affectionately known as Mimi to her family); she was a fun-loving, creative conversationalist who loved swapping stories and jokes with friends old and new. Jane was an adventurous world traveler, taking extended trips throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and Latin America usually with her husband Ted. From Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich to speeding tuk-tuk rides in Bangkok to pyramid climbs in Mexico, Jane embraced life with passion and optimism. Closer to home, she frequently traveled up and down the east coast to visit her children, grandchildren, and many friends and also to spend time at her beloved lake house near Lake George, NY.

Born in March 1938, Jane was raised in Queens, New York, the only child to devoted parents Joan and Harry Gunn. Moving to Catonsville, MD as a teenager, she graduated from Seton High School in Baltimore and attended Mount Saint Agnes College in Baltimore. She met her husband Ted who was a student at neighboring Loyola College. After a play that Jane had performed in, Ted 'crashed' the cast party and managed to impress her enough to earn a date at the Mt. St. Agnes Snow Ball dance where Jane was crowned the Snow Ball Queen. After a three year courtship, they married and remained happy for 48 years until Ted's death in 2008.

Always willing to sacrifice for the family, Jane left Mount St. Agnes College before graduating so that she could be with Ted while he earned his PhD in Physics at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. There, Jane began her long and accomplished career in education, teaching third graders at a parochial school until giving birth to her first child, Tim. After relocating to Maryland in 1963 and the arrival of three more children Doretta, Maureen, and Dan, Jane returned to school to earn her Bachelors in Education from Loyola College, commuting 150 miles round trip from Burkittsville to Baltimore for several years. After her father's death in 1967, Jane welcomed her mother into her home and warmly cared for her until her death in 1980. Jane taught in the Frederick County school system until 1988; first at Valley Elementary in Jefferson, then at an early Magnet School in Urbana. Jane also volunteered substantial amounts of time as the Religious Education Director of the St. Mary's Church, at the Burkittsville Ruritan, and at the Burkittsville Historic District Commission.

Upon moving to New Jersey in 1988, Jane served as Librarian and Media Instructor at the Immaculate Conception School in Somerville, NJ where she taught for nearly two decades. She quickly made many friends in NJ, through the ICS School, the Rutgers University community where Ted worked, and through her enthusiastic involvement in the New Jersey Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Jane retired from ICS in 2007 and in her remaining years dedicated herself more fully to volunteer work and spending quality time with friends and family. She loved to laugh and spent many hours entertaining her grandchildren.

Jane is preceded in death by parents Joan V. and Harry F. Gunn, husband Professor Theodore E. Madey, and grandson, Aidan M. O'Shea, who died in infancy. Jane is survived by her four children and their spouses (Tim and Diane Madey of Purcellville, VA; Doretta and Larry Witt of Finksburg, MD; Maureen and Kevin O'Shea of Charlottesville, VA: Dan and Jill Madey of Crownsville, MD), thirteen grandchildren (Lauren Madey; Katherine, Sarah, and Mary Witt; Austin, Garrett, Timothy, Kevin, Anna, and William O'Shea; Luke, Grace, and Julia Madey), many friends, and hundreds of students.

Jane's funeral mass will be at St Mary's Church at 4231 Catholic Church Rd, Petersville, MD at 10:30 AM on January 18th . Additionally, a memorial mass will be at 10:30 AM on January 30th at The Church of the Immaculate Conception at 35 Mountain Ave, Somerville, NJ. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hall Funeral Home of Purcellville, VA. The family suggests memorial donations to the NJ Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization – make checks payable to PEO Sisterhood Chapter I and send to PEO Chapter I; c/o Treasurer Donna Benz; 118 E. Maple Ave., Bound Brook, NJ 08805.
