Mr. Michael Mottern Stup, 67, of Frederick, a well known local musician, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at the Golden Living Center, in Frederick. He was the husband of Tawn Fogle Stup.
Born in Frederick on Feb. 4, 1941, he was a son of the late W. Wilson Stup and the late Ruth E. Pickett Stup.
Michael graduated from Frederick High School, Class of 1959, and had attended the Peabody Conservatory and recently received his degree in music from Frederick Community College.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the "The Fabulous Shades" in 1960 with Demetri "Penny" Callas. He was the leader of "Damion and the Classics," which played their first performance on March 29, 1963 at the Frederick High School junior class party and played the last set on New Year's Eve of 1983. Damion and the Classics recorded an album entitled "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and Forever," which was released in 1979.
Michael was the director of the Weinberg Center from 1983 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2005. He had also worked for the Frederick Keys. Studying history at FCC and screen writing at Hood College, he authored a short film screenplay and was rewriting it into a full length film.
He was chairman of the Cannon Restoration Group, which restored the Revolutionary War Cannon at Hessian Barracks. The dedication was April 22, 2007 at the Maryland School for the Deaf.
Michael had a great love for his entire family and his two dogs, Beaux and Muddy. He loved music, movies and history. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a joy for life. He was a talented musician and pianist.
Surviving in addition to his wife is one son, Christopher M. Stup and wife Nikol of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Sharon C. Hale of Jefferson; and a half-brother, John F. Stup of Thurmont.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Burnis D. Barrett will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Pallbearers will be the original members of Damion and the Classics.
