Patricia Chambers, nee Murray, died July 15 at Somerford Place in Frederick, from brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). She had lived in Frederick County for the past 35 years.
Born in the Mother Lode's capital, Placerville, Calif., Pat came from a Californio family descended from Eulalia P_rez de Guill_n Marin_ (1766-1878) of San Gabriel Mission. She received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of California at Berkeley in 1959. She married the son of Whittaker Chambers in Washington in 1961.
Pat moved in 1972 to Tuckahoe Farm in Middletown, where she raised three children. Divorced in 1987, she moved to Frederick. She worked at The Frederick News-Post in Advertising, then managed Sound Source. As part of Sound Source, she published The Frederick County Weather Almanac. Her work won awards for both advertising and the almanac. After retirement, she became a tour guide at Rose Hill Manor until May 2007.
During her 35 years in Frederick County, Pat gave of herself to the community in her work and on numerous boards, including the Frederick Arts Council, the Maryland Regional Ballet, St. John's Catholic Prep ("Prospect Hall"), the St. John's Graveyard Committee, and the Frederick Art Club (first vice president 2005-2006, second vice president 2006-2007). She was an avid member of Frederick's League of Women Voters and Torch Club.
Compassionate, open and upright, Pat Chambers was a mother and friend to any and all.
Survivors include her sister, Moira Murray DeWilde; children, David Chambers, Joseph Chambers and Moira Chambers Aveline; grandchildren, Michael Alexander Chambers, Raphael Pascal Rossant Chambers, Sophia Adela Chambers and Alexander Aveline; and nieces and nephew, John R. DeWilde III, Jennifer DeWilde Eubanks and Christina DeWilde Prescott.
Pat's family is holding a memorial, open to the public, at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Rose Hill Manor. Dress for summer. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the "Rose Hill Manor Fund" online or by check at the memorial. See details online at
