David Funsch Obituary

David Joseph Funsch, 77, of Frederick, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, February 20, 2016, following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Linda Pappas Funsch, whom he married in 1977.

Born August 23, 1938 in East Orange, NJ, David was the fourth son of the late Henry Herman and Helen Colleary Funsch. After graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, NJ, he enrolled at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, NJ, graduating in 1959 with a B.S. degree in Economics with additional study at The Warton School, University of Pennsylvania.

In 1960, David was accepted into the U. S. Navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. Upon completion of the program, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was assigned to the Naval Security Group, serving for a total of five years in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Treasure Island, CA, and was honorably discharged in 1965, having advanced to the rank of Lieutenant.

Following military service, David embarked upon a career as a financial advisor in New York City with Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and Alex Brown & Sons. In 1985, he relocated with his family to Frederick, MD, to manage the local Alex Brown & Sons' branch office. David remained with the company through several mergers, ultimately rising to the position of Director. He concluded his 45-year career as a Senior Vice President with Wells Fargo Advisors in Hagerstown.

David gave selflessly to multiple organizations throughout Frederick County including the Frederick Cotillion Club, Frederick Memorial Hospital's Development Council and "Order of the Good Samaritan," the Historical Society of Frederick County, and the Rotary Club of Frederick. He was a life member of the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, a member and director of the Frederick Community College Fund, and a board member of the Independent College Fund of Maryland. A lifelong Catholic, David was a parishioner of St. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church where he served as Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Parish Building Fund.

Charming and thoughtful, David was a gracious host with an irrepressible sense of humor. He and Linda frequently entertained family and friends in their Civil War - era farmhouse in Yellow Springs.

An avid golfer, he enjoyed golf with friends at Holly Hills Country Club and a variety of courses in the U.S. and abroad. As travel enthusiasts, Linda and David visited Europe and the British Isles on many occasions, as well as Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

A loving and devoted father of six, David is survived by three sons from his previous marriage, Mark Peter Funsch and wife Janine, of London, England, Eric David Funsch, of New York, and Jonathan Dillon Funsch, of Boca Raton, FL, and his three children with Linda, Andrew Peyton Funsch and wife Carolyn, of Baltimore, Alexandra Marie and husband, John Croyle, of Clarksburg, Catherine Elizabeth and husband, Robert Wood, of Raleigh, NC; seven grandchildren, Eva Marielle Funsch, Nicholas John Albert Funsch, Jessica Elizabeth Funsch, Thomas Newlin Wood, Peyton Marie Funsch, James Funsch Wood, and another soon to be born granddaughter; two brothers, Richard Funsch, of St. Petersburg, FL, and Jeffrey Funsch, of Syracuse, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Funsch.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, February 24, at the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E Church Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Thursday, February 25, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E Second Street, Frederick, with Father Keith Boisvert, pastor of Saint Katharine Drexel, as the celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in his name to the Memorial Fund, Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 8428 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD, 21702.

He helped me quite a bit with one of my investments about 20 years ago but the real reward,
had been his friendship :-).
