Carol P. Hacala, MS, RD, FADA

formerly of Grosse Pointe Woods - Carol P. Hacala, formerly of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, died at age 81 on January 28, 2019 at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air, MD.

Born Carol Sue Phelan on October 16, 1937 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, to parents Bess and Ray Phelan, a West Virginia movie theater owner. A 1955 graduate of Charleston Catholic High School, she then earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH.

In 1960, Carol married Navy Ensign Martin J. Hacala. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010.

Settling in suburban Detroit, Carol worked as a registered dietitian in area nursing homes and hospitals, including a decade as the Director of Dietetics at Doctor's Hospital in Detroit. She earned a Master's degree in health administration from Central Michigan University and became the first dietitian to be licensed as a nursing home administrator in Michigan. In 1995, she was named a Charter Fellow of the American Dietetic Association. Carol retired from the State of Michigan Department of Public Health as a hospital and nursing home inspector.

Carol is survived by her four children: Jeff (Joan Michel), Mark (Alexandra Mason), Catherine Bridges, Michael (Catherine Osborn), and two grandchildren: Michael and Michelle Bridges. She is predeceased by her husband, Martin (1934-2010), Captain, USN, whom she will join in Arlington National Cemetery.
