Gerald F. "Jerry" Fischer

Ann Arbor - passed away peacefully in his home on March 7. Jerry was born in 1931 and grew up on the east side of Detroit, attending Southeastern High School and Wayne State university. While at Wayne State, Jerry met Arnetta, his loving wife of 63 years, through Gamma Delta, a Lutheran student organization. After graduation, Jerry served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Monroe, VA. Upon discharge, Jerry and Arnetta returned to Detroit, where they lived for the next 30 years, raising three daughters.

Jerry had a 30-year career with the City of Detroit, holding various positions including Budget Director and Deputy Finance Director. After retirement, he served on the City of Detroit Pension Board and as a board member with the DRCEA. Upon retirement from the city, Jerry took a position in Ann Arbor as the Finance Director for Washtenaw County, where he served until 1993. His final working years were spent at Concordia University in Ann Arbor where he held the position of VP of Finance, retiring in 2000. In addition to his long career, Jerry was very active in the Lutheran Church, serving in various capacities at St. John in Detroit, Grace in Redford, and most recently St. Paul Lutheran in Ann Arbor. He was also an active volunteer in neighborhood organizations and as a Rotarian.

In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by his daughters Elaine Endahl (John), Janet Fischer (Dan Baessler), and Anne Fischer (John Heins), as well as five grandchildren, David (Meg), Matthew (Mary) and Katy Endahl, Ryan and Nick Baessler, and one great-grandson (Isaiah Endahl).

Visitation at Nie Funeral home (West Liberty) in Ann Arbor, Friday March 9, 3:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral Service on Saturday, March 10, 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Liberty in Ann Arbor, with visitation from 10:30 to 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Glen Eden in Livonia, MI. Donations may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Special Gifts fund.
