Joan Gove Austin

Norcross - Joan "Jo" Gove Austin, 89, of Norcross, GA, formerly of Loudon, TN and Bloomfield Hills, MI, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2018. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and knowing her was to know kindness. Jo was a graduate of Baldwin High School in Birmingham, MI, where she received the DAR award for outstanding activity in High School, and Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio where she majored in kindergarten and primary education. She was an enthusiastic elementary school teacher and superb soprano, singing many years with the choir of Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Jo was a lifelong sports fan and vigorously supported the involvement of her family in all activities, especially sports and music. She excelled in squash and tennis, winning several Birmingham Athletic Club championships, and loved to play golf at Springbrook Golf Club in Niota, TN. Jo loved dogs and never met a Puli she didn't like. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Rick; brother Bob Gove; and children Dodie Atkins, Jim (Louise) Austin, Bill (Tracey) Austin and Connie (Chris) Atkins. She delighted in the joy of her ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, spread across the country from California to New Jersey and Michigan to Georgia, and across the pond in Australia. A memorial service will be held on July 5, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Mansions at Sandy Springs in Peachtree Corners, GA. In lieu of flowers or if you would like to honor Jo's life, memorials may be made to the Rick Austin Racquet Up/YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps Campership Fund, which helps Detroit Public School students in the urban squash program Racquet Up Detroit attend YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps wilderness adventure camping programs, supporting two of Jo's favorite charities at once. Racquet Up Detroit, PO Box 11404, Detroit, MI 48211 or www.racquetup.org. Arrangements by Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. 770-448-5757.
