Mary Alice Whiting Obituary
Mary Alice Whiting

Batavia, IL - Mary Alice Whiting passed away on January 18, 2019 at the Holmstad in Batavia, IL, one month shy of her 95th birthday.

Born on Feb. 15, 1924 in Detroit, MI to Russian immigrant parents Andrew and Mary (Baron) Mays, she grew up in Dearborn, MI. She was a proud alumna of Fordson High School where she honed her writing skills as a co-editor of the Tower Tribune newspaper. Following graduation she worked as a draftsman at Ford Motor Co., later pursuing a bachelor's degree at the University of Detroit.

In 1947 she married Army Air Corps Capt. Edmund J. Whiting in St. Petersburg, FL. The couple lived first in the Washington, D.C. area, then in Schenectady, NY, where together they built their first house by hand. Upon returning to Michigan, they lived in Southfield, Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield.

Mary Alice focused her energies on raising three children, but volunteered frequently for school and church activities. She enthusiastically pursued hobbies such as sewing, gardening, photography and architectural drawing. She and Ed traveled widely throughout the United States and Europe, and also visited Australia, New Zealand and Russia. After Edmund's death in 1990, Mary Alice traveled to Ukraine to meet her father's relatives. In her last years she returned to writing, recording vignettes about her father's life as an immigrant.

Mary Alice was a gracious woman who possessed the gift of appreciating beauty in nature and in the people she met. She will be missed by her three children, John, Anne Mary Teichert (Harry), and Wanita Forgacs (Bill), by her seven grandchildren, by her four great grandchildren, and by her aunt/adopted sister Charlotte, with whom she grew up. Her family is grateful for the religious faith and for the love of art and music that Mary Alice shared with us. We cherish her boundless loving energy and the gift of the many years we were able to spend with her.

Visitation will be from 3:00 - 7:00pm on Friday, Feb. 15 at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in Farmington, Michigan. Funeral mass will be at 1:00 pm on Sat., Feb. 16 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Interment will follow immediately at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
