Robert Eugene (Bob) Mosher Ph.D. Obituary
Robert (Bob) Eugene Mosher, PhD

Holt - age 96, born in Detroit to Eugene Guy and Bertha Emma (Gable) Mosher on September 27, 1920; died at his Holt, Michigan home on January 15, 2017.

Bob attended Detroit schools, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Wayne State University (WSU) in 1942. He worked in the steel and rubber industries before serving overseas in the Army from 1945 through 1946. In 1948, he received his Master of Science and in 1950 his PhD, both degrees in Analytical Chemistry from WSU.

Bob worked as a research analyst at the WSU College of Medicine during his PhD studies. As Dr. Mosher, he became Technical Director of the Department of Research at Providence Hospital in Detroit. When Providence Hospital moved to Southfield in 1973, he became Director of the Department of Physiology and Research, a position he held until retirement in 1983. At Providence, Bob performed clinical research, taught research methods to Resident Physicians, managed physiological testing, and was Editor of the Providence Hospital Medical Bulletin, Director of Graphic Arts and Medical Photography, and Chairman of the Hospital Safety Committee and the Institutional Review Board.

He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a 75-year member of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the American Association of Clinical Chemists, the Geochemical Society, the Michigan Basin Geological Society, and many other academic and professional organizations. His over 60 published papers in peer-reviewed journals include 40 in clinical chemistry and 21 in geochemistry. Bob had a second career in geochemistry, performing chemical analyses of Silurian rock samples collected in North America and Europe, developing chemical profiles of rock-formations, and publishing papers with WSU Prof. John Sanford. He also analyzed hundreds of Michigan sands and published a digital history of Michigan Public Health.

Robert E. Mosher and Gladys Kodweiss were married in 1943 and had six children: Kenneth R. Mosher (Janet); Susanne Mosher Janes (Loring) [deceased 1995]; Gail Mosher Gundlach (Tim); Gary E. Mosher [deceased 2015]; Valerie Mosher Crafts (William); and Laura B. Mosher. Bob was active in the Boy Scouts with his sons and received the Scouter's Training Award. Following the 1971 death of Gladys Mosher, Dr. Mosher married G. Elaine Beane, PhD, in 1979 and the family added Alex Langford, her son. Their life together was filled with family (seven children, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren), geology fieldtrips, genealogy, writing, books, photography, art, and music. Bob enjoyed trips to Europe and the cabin "up north", his friends in the Central Michigan Lapidary & Mineral Society, and the house in Holt where he finally had shelves for all his books.

The family has been served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, and plans a family memorial in May 2018. The family thanks the staff of McLaren Home Care/Hospice for their expert care of Dr. Mosher during his final illness. Contributions in honor of Dr. Robert E. Mosher may be sent to the McLaren Home Care and Hospice Foundation, 1515 Cal Drive, Davison, MI 48423. Please indicate that your gift is in memory of Dr. Mosher.
