The grandson of Azorean Portuguese immigrants, Gene was born January 22, 1946 at the old St. Agnes hospital to F. Louis and Doris McCorkle Gomes. He matriculated at Fresno High School and Fresno State, his parents Alma Mater, before completing his education at UOP, McGeorge School of Law. His goal was to join his dad's law practice upon graduation, but his father guided him into the Fresno D.A.'s office as an introduction to practicing law. Gene flourished there, quickly rising in the ranks to become chief deputy. In 1977, he realized his dream joining his dad's practice, where he remained until his appointment to the bench in 1980. Likeable and unpretentious, Gene enjoyed his many years on the bench, and according to plan, died while still serving in the job he so loved. He was lucky to have had a grandfather and father who taught, by example, to be compassionate, fair-minded and empathetic. His major goal in life was to live up to their standards and be worthy of their name. He is survived by his wife and partner of 47 years, Rebecca Phillips Gomes and his adored and adoring children, twins, Armas Elliott Gomes and Leslie Elizabeth Gomes, her husband David Yengoyan and grandchildren Lily Grace and Alexander David; also his only sibling, Loris Mitchell, her husband Roger and nephews Larry and Jeran Ott. Gene had a very wide circle of friends who are grieving along with his family on the passing of a fine man. A service will be held at the First Congregational Church 2131 N. Van Ness Blvd on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to express their gratitude to Drs. Chooljian, Heller and Ambati for their counsel and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the San Joaquin River Parkway, 11605 Old Friant Rd, Fresno 93730 or Cabrillo Club #10 C.P.D.E.S. Hall, 172 W. Jefferson, Fresno 93706.
