GLENN WAEHNER Obituary

Glenn C. Waehner, devoted family man, inventor, high-tech industry executive and real estate developer, died suddenly on Monday, February 14, 2011, at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, CA. He was 66 years old. Born to Rose and Rudolph Waehner in Chicago, Il., Mr. Waehner held a BES in Electrical Engineering and in Physics from Johns Hopkins University, an MSEE from New York University, and a PEE (PhD without thesis) in Electrical Engineering from New York University. Mr. Waehner launched his career at Norden, a division of United Technologies, where he was instrumental in the Avionics Display program for the Space Shuttle. He authored over 30 patents while at Norden. In 1978, Mr. Waehner became Vice President and General Manager of Canberra Industries' Nuclear Instruments Division. Success at Canberra led to his appointment as President of American Dynamics in 1985. Under Mr. Waehner's leadership, American Dynamics became an industry leader in large and mid-sized Closed Circuit Television video matrix systems. In 1999, Mr. Waehner and his senior team moved to Pelco. He served as Senior Vice President for Research & Development, helping Pelco become the new dominant player in the CCTV industry. In 2009, Mr. Waehner formed Acuity Systems, where he served as President and CEO until his passing. Glenn believed there was no place more beautiful than Lake George in upstate New York, where he was President of Brook Hill Development, property owner and real estate developer of Lagoon Manor in Bolton Landing, NY. Mr. Waehner enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, kind spirit and eagerness to share his knowledge. Mr. Waehner is survived by Susan, his wife of 44 years; two sons, Kevin and Greg; daughters-in-law, Anne and Catherine; four grandchildren, Luke, Grant, Lily and Henry; his sister Sandra; brother-in-law Frank; and two nieces, Cheryl and Carolyn. A Memorial Service will be held at Peoples Church G.L. Johnson Chapel, 7172 North Cedar Avenue in Fresno on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. A Second Service is planned at the Congregational Church of New Canaan Connecticut (where Glenn and family were longtime residents) for Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenn's name to the Lake George Land Conservancy, 4905 Lake Shore Drive, Bolton Landing, NY 12814, www.lglc.org. Glenn was one of the cherished buddies from grade/high school days in the distant 1950s

I worked with Glenn when I was a 20 year old kid at American Dynamics and he was one of the kindest people I've ever met. Rest in peace my friend!

Glenn hired me back in 2004 when he was CTO at Pelco. He was one of the brightest people I have had the fortune of knowing. He was a kind boss and a good man. The world is poorer for his loss.

Glenn was truly an ingenious engineer and greatly admired in the engineering community. Personally, Glenn provided tremendous inspiration and help to me in my own engineering career. I am proud to have worked with Glenn on several design projects, notably the information display system for the Space Shuttle. I never ceased to be amazed by his innovativeness, enthusiam and insight. A very well liked and highly respected co-worker, Glenn's upbeat personality was infectious. I will always remember Glenn as a very special person and we all are lesser for his passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Glenn is one of those people who add so much to other's lives. A mentor, teacher, coach, truely nice person, and, rare in today's world, a true gentlemen. I will miss him and remember him fondly. My deepest condolences to his family and all those who knew him.

Glenn was one of the greatest people I ever had a fortune to meet in my life. He was a real father-figure to me. That's why his sudden loss is so incredibly painful and hard to comprehend. "It's a Wonderful Life", the Christmas classic, was his favorite movie and just as the main character touched so many lives in that film, so did Glenn. I know I am one of those very fortunate ones. Please accept my deepest, most heartfelt condolences. Glenn will forever live in our hearts.

I was at Pelco when Glenn became the Vice President of Engineering. I always enjoyed his smile, and his enthusiasm. I'm sad to hear of his sudden passing.

Glenn has left a lasting impression on me, he had a calm, soft-spoken manner about him, he never talked down to anyone, I never heard him raise his voice, he always treated everyone he met with respect and courtesy, and always offered his help. I remember him as a man who always had a smile and kind word to say. It would be easy to say I became a better engineer for knowing him, but more importantly I’m a better person, and I feel very grateful and privileged just to have known him.

I knew Glenn as a colleague, and worked with him in our professional capacity for several years. I only recieved encouragement and respect from him. Please accept my condolences and this prayer for him "O Lord, glorify his station, shelter him under the pavilion of Thy supreme mercy, cause him to enter Thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate his existence in Thy exalted rose garden, that he may plunge into the see of light in the world of mysteries."

"I was blessed to work with Glenn for 3 years...In addition to being incredibly brilliant, he was just as down to earth and always quick with a smile. My fondest memory is that he was a fellow Earl Grey tea & cream enthusiast...One day we were in short supply at the coffee station at Pelco, I happened to mention in it passing in the hallway...he told me not to worry, he'd take care of it. 10 minutes later, the cupboards were stocked for months! Reminiscing makes me smile."

Glenn and I were high school mates back in the distant 1960s. He always had the spark and spirit of a true innovator - and he will be sorely missed.
