ELIZABETH MALLORY Obituary

Elizabeth "Beth" K. Mallory gently passed away from natural causes on June 27, 2017, in Monterey, CA. She turned 88 on May 31, 2017. A farm girl native of Fresno, CA, she graduated from Fresno State College and married John S. Mallory of Madera, CA in 1951. A proud Navy wife, she managed a family and the home front through Captain Mallory's wide ranging 28 year naval career at sea and at home ports in California, Florida, Virginia, and Puerto Rico, and a brief, if memorable, stint at homesteading in Nevada in the late 1950's. Very active in her kitchen, she was always part of the Navy wives' cookbook committee wherever she and her late husband were stationed. Beth spent 30 years in Coronado, CA, moving there with John when he retired from the Navy in the 1980's. She spent her last years in an assisted living facility in Monterey, CA, near her son, Jeff, and his husband. Beth was among the first generation born of Volga Germans who emigrated to the United States before the first world war. Very proud of her heritage, and especially the cooking from the Old Country, Beth patiently wrote down her grandmother Bitter's many unwritten recipes for countless old world dishes to save for her family. She collected many books, pictures and articles about her forebears' progress across the globe. Beth thoroughly enjoyed her life in Coronado and fully engaged with the local community. She loved gardening and sharing her cymbidium orchids with friends. She was a president of Bridge and Bay Garden Club, winning awards in the annual competitions and studying Ikebana. She was passionate about her decades of fellowship and service at St. Paul's Church of the Voyager, and an active leader in her church women's groups. Editing their newsletters inspired her to learn to use the computer. As an avid artist, Beth enjoyed painting, sewing, sculpture, and collages throughout her life, taking up photography and computer greeting cards in her later years. Her home was filled with her art work, arrangements and her vast collection of sea shells. A remarkable solo traveler after her husband's passing, she made several international trips and a Panama Canal passage by herself in addition to extensive travels around this country. One of her most moving excursions was the trip to the Middle East visiting significant Christian historical locations. She was preceded in death by her husband John; and son Tom. Beth is survived by her son, Jeff Mallory and husband Kevin Smith of Big Sur, CA; daughter, Sharon "Essee" Mallory; and granddaughter, Christina Lorene Kanta of Spring Valley, CA. Beth's ashes will be laid to rest next to her son, Tom, in a Memorial Service at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera, CA, on Monday, September 11, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the United Methodist Women's Group at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Coronado, CA.

Aunt Beth was truly part of the greatest generation. True to her faith and her God, true to her family and friends, true to her Country and true to her beliefs.
Beth lived the words of Jesus, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. A good life lived well. She will be missed.
