Funeral services for Lawrence Russell Byers, 78, will be held at noon Friday, Dec. 7, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Ragland. The Rev. Thomas Kelley, pastor. The Rev. Wallace Pinson will officiate. Interment will be in Morning Star Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 8.
Lawrence passed away Nov. 29, 2012, at St. Vincent's East. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beason and Creola Byers; a brother, Benjamin Byers.
Mr. Byers was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and educated in St. Clair County Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Seaboard Railroad with 37 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Byers of Newport News, Va.; children and grandchildren; sisters, Louise (Samuel) Jenkins of Cleveland, Ohio, Pretha Oden, of Chicago, Ill., Imogene (Earl) Miller of Philadelphia, Pa., Creola Jackson of Apple Valley, Calif., Patricia Byers and Jeanette Davis of Ragland; brothers, Billy (Deborah) Byers of Apple Valley, Calif., Charles (Emmie) Byers of Ragland and Gregory Byers of Los Angeles, Calif.
