DEWAYNE FRANCIS
Dewayne Francis Cowart, Sr., 76, longtime resident of Hawthorne, Florida, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center, following a long illness.
Mr. Cowart was born in Waldo, Florida on July 7, 1941 to the late Howell and Rachel Cowart. He was a graduate of Gainesville High School and had served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Cowart worked as a letter carrier in Gainesville for 37 years until his retirement in 2001. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Paran Baptist Church, Grandin. Mr. Cowart was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred McNeil.
Survivors include; two daughters, Deborah (Binion) Waters, LaCrosse, and Melanie Robin (Doug) Mercer, Gainesville; a son, Wayne (Laura) Cowart, Gainesville; a brother, David (Kathy) Cowart, of Keystone Heights; eight grandchildren, Todd, Travis, Tiffany, Darrin, Kyle, Rance, Shannon and Cerra. Thirteen great grandchildren also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 11:00 A.M., in the Hawthorne Cemetery, with Rev. Charles Litzell officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606. Please visit his memorial page at
