Although I never met this wonderful author, I have been teaching "Bless Me, Ultima" to my college students for many years. The book, which has remained a favorite of mine, was instrumental in sparking my interest in the New Mexico culture(s) and landscape(s) and has even been responsible for sparking a friendship forged when I visited the Hispanic Cultural Center for the art exhibition based on the novel. I was too early, but met some wonderful ladies who asked me to join them for lunch! My sympathies to the family, but what a wonderful legacy Rudolfo Anaya left to the literary world, but also beyond that.

Thank you Rudolfo Anaya for your voice in American literature! I remember reading the last pages of Bless Me Ultimate to my 9th grade class in Gilroy twenty years ago and crying. I was so moved by your characters and your writing. I feel fortunate to have met Anaya and have passed on his literature to my students and children. May God bless you. My condolences go out to the family and friends. Anaya's spirit will live on in his works.

My sincerest condolences. I was fortunate to play "Gabriel" in the movie Bless Me, Ultima but even more fortunate to reconnect with Rudolfo on set after many years when we filmed all over northern New Mexico. I grew up in the South Valley of Albuquerque and my mom Margarita ran a theater company "La Compañia" where Rudolfo was a member and mentor. Through his storytelling, the New Mexican corazón was shared so that we can teach our children and the world about our special place. Words cannot express his impact on mom, our family, the chicano movement - and me.... so simply, I say "Gracias, Rudolfo. Gracias"

Rudy connected me to the Hispano Folklore that I grew up with growing up in Latin America for numerous years. The Folklore of El Kookooi, the tradition of the Boogie Man that transcends in the Hispano Folklore. He invited aritists like my self and other New Mexico artists to build the the giant monster sculpture that was to burn away all the worries and problems of the past to start a new season. We would collected the the pieces of paper that people wrote down their problems and worries and put them into the burning monster so the worries would go away. It was a fun and creative time for me. I most enjoyed talking to Rudy about the Hispano Folklore that we both were familar with and loved. It truly enhanced my creative life. It was an honor to know Rudolfo Anaya.

The Alonzo family in Texas and throughout the United States and as a former state representative I can say the state of Texas bids farewell to a great Chicano that recorded through literature our existence. Literature is life and passion. I still remember my mom using the egg and broom to sweep away the bad so we would have hood health. And now with covid 19...we remember. May Anaya rest in peace and we send condolences. Their loos I'd our loss...but we remember and not forget.
