GASTONIA - Fredrick Riley Mathis, 79, of Gastonia, born Aug. 11, 1933, in Gaffney, S.C. to Will and Retha Mathis, moved on from this life Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at his daughter's house in Charlotte.
He is the proud father of Gordon Dale, Danny Lee, Mark Henry, Dessie Rebecca, Denise Mae and Sonya Anita; grandfather of Crystal, Danny, Barbara, Lindsay, Joshua, Logan, Jonathan, Jeremy, Mitchell, Michael, Benjamin, Alan and Blair; great-grandfather of Owen, Patrick, Leigha, James and Oakley; father-in-law of Laura Mathis, Mark Putnam, Russell Yeomans and Christine Thompson, in which he is survived by all.
He is also survived by the mother of his children, Joan Carolyn Fox-Mathis; and sister, Hiley Dixon.
"Freddy T" was an Army veteran and retiree from Duff Norton Company in Charlotte. He is best remembered for his desire to "keep things simple" and even more so in his last days. He truly never met a stranger and was willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed one.
The family would like to thank the remarkable caregivers at Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville, daddy's hospice nurse, Sarah, and Dr. Shope for their wonderful care. We would also like to acknowledge daddy's friends Homer, Ruth, Glenda and Willie who made his life full. And to Debbie, who is his niece, but has been more like another daughter, thank you for loving daddy.
Family visitation will be 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Renovatus Church, 1209 Little Rock Road, Charlotte, NC 28214. A funeral service will immedi-ately follow at 7 p.m.
The Mathis family is in the care of Gaskin Services, Matthews, where online condolences may be offered at www.gaskinservices.com.

Will I forever think our escape on Christmas Eve, the smile on your face as Glen Campbell filled the car, your resolve as we listened moments later to strangers guiding us through the maze of palliative options as you stroked Ms. Bonnie or the light that faded only days later... I still hear your voice every time I shut the door in a hotel room and long to get another, "Sonya, this is daddy..." voicemail. I love and miss you daddy!

Nearly been a year now. I throughout 2013 often picked up the phone to call him and realized Dad now has a heavenly number. As well...I see and love my grandaughter Clara through the eyes of which Dad would have seen her.

What an amazing man & friend! Fred touch my heart many times & he always made me smile & laugh. He cherish my mom (Evelyn) as a wonderful friend and neighbor. Mom & Fred used to enjoy each others conversation on a daily basis sitting on the front porch talking. He loved to mow her grass. He loved being outside no matter what the temperature was. Mom use to say "Fred its to hot for you to be out here. Come in this house & cool off & handed him a cold water". He's in Heaven with mom & his family having a great ole time. He will surely be missed. Thank You Fred for all you did for my mom. We truly appreciated you for your wonderful kindness. God Bless the Mathis family! My prayers are with you all.
