Dr. Sigal was one of the first researchers to recognize the resilience, not merely the problems, of Holocaust survivors. He was a pioneer in the use of community, rather than merely clinical, samples -- a method that has become normative and has led to strong confirmation of his original findings.
All survivors of persecution and disaster, and all subsequent researchers in the field of mass traumatology, owe him a debt of gratitude.

I was privileged to begin my analysis journey with Dr. Sigal in 1975. I was only 21 and I benefited from his wisdom and insight. Thirty-seven years later, I remember and refer to conversations that we had. I am grateful for the unending respect that he granted me.

Dr. Sigal will be missed by all in the department of psychiatry at the JGH. He touched all who came in contact with him. Even toward those who didn't work with him, he was warm and open, respectful, generous with his time, and always a pleasure to talk to. I still remember when I was a resident 30 years ago, sitting alone in the cafeteria. He didn't know me well, but came and sat down and chatted with me like we were old friends. I never forgot that conversation and his demonstration of respect and generosity of spirit.

My sincerest condolences on the passing of Dr. Sigal. He was such a lovely soul who treated all around him with kindness and respect. I was fortunate enough to work with him for several years and his influence has remained with me, it always will. He will truly be missed.
