Edith Allen Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY - Edith Perman Allen, 93, of South Hadley, formerly of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Mamaroneck, N.Y., died peacefully at home March 6, 2013.

Edith was married to the late Paul Perman and the late Henry Allen.

She was the mother of Richard Perman, Barbara Perman and Alice Perman Leveston and was also a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.

Edith was a professional volunteer and philanthropist, having been involved in many Jewish and secular organizations, often serving in local and national leadership positions. She was most proud of her work as a braillist, transcribing music and literature into Braille.

She served on the board of the Well Spouse Association and was founder of the Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island, whose important work continues today.

Edith remained active into her 90's, serving on committees at Loomis Village, the residential community where she lived. Edith had an insatiable curiosity about people and the world. She loved nature, science, birds, the arts, listening to the opera, attending lectures and tending to her orchids and African violets. Edith was drawn to birds and had many canaries throughout her life.

Edith's graveside funeral will be on Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. at the Old Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Queens, NY.

The family will receive callers on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (service at 7:30 p.m.), Thursday, March 14 from 10 to 4 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (service at 7:30 p.m.) and Friday, March 15 at 10 to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. at the home of Barbara Perman, 123 Maplewood Circle, Amherst, MA.

The family requests that donations be made to Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island, P.O. Box 1073, Rockville Centre, NY 11571 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
