NORTHAMPTON - F. James "Jim" Osborn, 85, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016.

Born Sept. 27, 1931, in Northampton, he was the son of Dr. G. Francis and Elizabeth Kitchell Osborn.

He is survived by his beloved Dorothy Andrew of Northampton; sister-in-law Sue Osborn of Morrisville, Vermont; nephew Ron Osborn and spouse Diana of Johnson, Vermont,and their sons Sam and Ben; niece the Rev. Sherry Osborn of Hinesburg, Vermont; and extended family and loyal friends. His brother Jonathan Osborn and parents predeceased Jim.

Jim graduated from Northampton High School 1951, was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954. Upon his return, Jim continued his training through the Smith Vocational School with a focus in agriculture. Following Jim's work at Look Park, he joined Amherst College buildings and grounds department until his retirement in October 1994. Jim was especially proud to be a member of the Amherst College family for 35 years.

Jim was generous, tenderhearted with a dry sense of humor. Family was deeply important to him. Family gatherings were filled with laughter, storytelling, snowshoeing, skiing, board games, putt-putt golf and good food. He traveled extensively with family and independently. For years, Jim returned to Lane Ranch in Estes Park, Colorado,where he enjoyed horseback trail riding, fishing and hiking. While in Northampton, he was an active member of the community enjoying the local shops, college sports, theater and music. Jim especially loved time at Look Park in all kinds of weather and temperatures! He was a die hard Red Sox fan.

Later in life Jim moved to Rockridge Retirement Community where he participated in many activities, delighted in watching birds and enjoyed his collection of treasures. He also met the love of his life, Dorothy and her devoted extended family. Jim deeply appreciated the care and kindness he received from the Rockridge staff. These last 12 years have been some of Jim's happiest.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Rockridge Retirement Community. Reception to follow.
