SHELBURNE FALLS - Karen Brandow, 60, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at home in Shelburne Falls.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1954 and spent most of her adult life in western Massachusetts and in Guatemala. She devoted her life to making this world a better place through her singing, counseling and Spanish interpreting.

Karen was a loving partner to Charlie King, a devoted daughter, and a loyal friend whose calm presence was appreciated by her community and supported by her Buddhist practice. She was grateful for all of the blessings and privileges of her life which she attempted to use to be of service to others.

She died as she lived - making conscious choices about medical treatment based on her most deeply held values. She wishes to be remembered for adding in her "grain of sand" to the ongoing search for peace and justice in this world.

She asks that anyone wishing to honor her memory make a donation in her name to The Innocence Project in New York, 40 Worth St., Suite 701, New York, NY 10013, or to Christian Peacemaker Teams, P.O. Box 6508, Chicago, IL 60680-6508.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Church, 17 Severance St., Shelburne Falls, MA.

Unimaginable. Just learned yesterday (2/15/15) of Karen's physical parting. As with others writing here, this is indeed a sad shock. Only met Karen and you, Charlie, at some of your inimitable concerts over a few years, here in Tucson in Feb, and at Elat Chayyim on the Woodstock side of the Hudson (before they moved, perhaps in 2005, the summer Reb Zalman was there).

Karen and you created together a community heart connection, with your marvelous music, inspired spirit, and compassionate action, which will continue to blossom. Yes, Pete's kids ~ praise Shechinah!!

May Karen's memory be as a blessing. May you and all her dear ones ever feel comforted among the many people in many places, who care.

Charlie - I can't tell you how shocked I was when you told me yesterday that Karen was gone. I considered her to be one of the best examples of a human being that there was! I would like to keep in touch with you, if you would like. We have been friends for a long time and I will never forget the time you and Roy shared our hospitality at the same time. With prayers and wishes for all the best for you in this trying time and beyond! - Joe Torma

What a sad shock! I met Karen through PCUSA and was so moved by her music, especially when she sang in Spanish. So beautiful! Grateful that she and Charlie graced PCMNY with a concert a few years ago. May God welcome her with open arms and bless Charlie as he continues on with her in his heart.

I didn't know Karen well, but was lucky enough to work with her and Charlie on a handful of occasions at Pax Christi USA gatherings. I've only known Karen for the past two years, and then in the context of having dinner before watching NBA games on TV together -- or emailing about the games we watched separately. I was, however, fortunate enough to see and feel the grace and dignity that others speak about when describing Karen. Since our acquaintance was made after her diagnosis, I am grateful to have heard her discuss her plans and hopes for the last years of her life. Her peace and clarity have already helped the world, and will continue to do so. Charlie, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve this incredible loss, and find comfort in the beautiful memories.

Karen was a gift to not only her community, Charlie and all, she was a gift to the world, some one who shared a vision of a peace-filled planet where the least were as cherised as thsoe with the most. Her beautiful, generous and kind spirit and her clear voice --both in song and conscience, will be missed.

Charlie, There can be no words for a loss as profound and unfathomable as yours.
I only met Karen the one time that you and she came here for the benefit for the Labor History Association, but her inner beauty as well as outer beauty and the devotion you clearly had for one another was deeply moving. I am so very sad for you and with you.

I hadn't seen Karen since 1971 until she came with Charlie to give a house concert in LA. I enjoyed their music and catching up with Karen. She was a true comrade and I will miss her voice, singing and justice seeking.

I only met her once, but when I spoke to her, she spoke to me so calmly and reverently, and she made me feel so comfortable and relaxed. She was an amazing lady, and the world lost a great lady when it lost Karen.

May you now find the peace all around you that you gave to the world.
