ARROYO HONDO, N.M - Nancy Board, who was formerly of Amherst, Mass., passed away at her home in Arroyo Hondo, (Taos) Jan. 30, 2013, from complications due to a fall.

Nancy was born May 9, 1949, the eldest of five children to LaVerne C. Dunn and Phyllis B. (Watters) Dunn, in Fort Collins, Colo.

When she was younger, Nancy traveled throughout the United States, graduating from Kubasaki High in Okinawa, Japan, in 1967 and then returning to Colorado. She attended Colorado State University on several academic scholarships.

In college, she met Daniel Board. They married Oct. 21, 1971. In 1973, they moved to Amherst, Mass., making this their home throughout their professional careers.

Nancy worked for the town of Amherst in the town manager's office before moving to Amherst College in 1991 as secretary to the treasurer. Nancy then worked in the departments of philosophy and black studies. Afterwards, she became the editorial assistant on the American Mathematical Monthly until her retirement in 2011.

Nancy served as vice-president for programs of the "Hands Across the Valley Quilters Guild." An exceptional quilter, she won numerous awards exhibiting her exceptional quilts in multiple venues in the northeast.

Following her husband's accidental death in June 2004, Nancy volunteered at the Hospice Fisher Home in North Amherst, Mass.

After retiring from Amherst College, she returned to the country she loved and missed, the West. Here she continued pursuing her love for quilting and nature "under the big, wide-open skies."

Her four siblings, mother-in-law Martha Board of Fort Collins, Colo., and dear long-time friend, Dee Brace of Amherst, Mass., survive Nancy.

Nancy's wishes were to be cremated with no memorial and to have her ashes scattered with her husband's.

Nancy contributed generously to countless animal causes. Any donation in Nancy's memory may be made to any animal life saving charities.
