Mr Rodgers, who lived in Whitchurch-on-Thames in South Oxfordshire and was best known for his roles in TV hits May To December and Fresh Fields, died on Saturday aged 74.
The actor and director, who was born in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, had been the patron of theatre group the Shinfield Players, based in Whitley Wood Lane, since 1994.
Since moving to the area, Mr Rodgers had taken an interest in community events in West Berkshire, notably the Watermill theatre near Newbury and the Goring Mill gallery in the village.
He had also become a popular figure in Pangbourne, where he had developed links with the village’s Help The Aged branch.
In November 1999 Mr Rodgers popped into the charity shop in Reading Road to celebrate its fifth anniversary with volunteers and managers.
Charity retail general manager Trina Finney paid tribute to a “wonderful and friendly” man who took interest in the shop and would donate items for it to sell.
She told the Evening Post: “I vividly remember Anton helping us celebrate the fifth anniversary of our shop in Pangbourne.
“He was such a wonderful, warm and friendly man who took great interest in the work that the charity was doing and would regularly donate items for us to sell.
“He was incredibly approachable, easy to talk to and showed a genuine interest and admiration for the work the volunteers were doing.
“There was no bravado during his visit, just an honest commitment to the local community.”
Mrs Finney added: “I was grateful to the support he gave the local Help The Aged shops and saddened to hear of his passing. He will be sorely missed.”
Mr Rodgers leaves a wife, actress Elizabeth Garvie, and three sons, as well as a son and daughter from a previous marriage.

Joanne O´Dwyer I was lucky enough to first encounter this wonderful man, in a play called Windy City 1982 I was 16 at the time. I never forgot seeing the play and the lasting impression his acting made upon me.
I went into watch May to December in 1989 which I enjoyed so much, the programme was wonderful made even better by Antons portrail of Alec Callendar
In fact I´ve started watching the series again. I´m 57 and have never forgotten this great actor. He seemed to me to be a lovely man and so humble.
Sadly missed but will never be forgotten. I´m sure by whoever was lucky enough to see Anton or meet him in life. Would never forget what a lovely man he was. Some people we meet in life leave a lasting impression Anton was certainly one of those persons. January 2024

I was booked for my first professional job, as a dancer in The Old Curiosity Shop (tv) Anton, who played Dick Swiveller, came over as I poked my head around the door on the first day of rehearsals "Go over there and have a cup of coffee" he said. He put me so much at ease that day - as I had been really nervous, up till that moment. Thank you Anton, so much

I was privileged to meet Anton Rogers and his wife during their recent trip to Sydney when they gave a wonderful performance to the Jane Austen Society of Australia, which was very much enjoyed by all who attended. I was very sad to hear of his passing and would like to express my sincere sympathy to his family.

My wife Ann and I always enjoyed your visits to our home on the little screen, Anton. We will never forget your modesty at my complimenting you just after your veterinary series, when we chanced to see you in the snack bar in Waitrose on the Oxford Road, Reading. We shall miss you, Anton, and cherish your legacy.

Hello family & friends of Anton,
I was upset to hear of his passing.
I have a fond memory of Anton which illustrates his kindness & humanity, none of the big shot 'I am' about Anton. I was working on May To September in Harefield High Street on a cold snowy day when I slipped up on some ice, Someone came over & helped me up & asked me whether I was alright. I was surprised to find it was Anton, although those of you who know him well would not be surprised at his help. A sad loss to us all.
