Sgt. Joseph Francis Stifter

Was born on February 1, 1985 at White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles. He was named after his two grandfathers, Francis Joseph Tozar and William Francis Stifter.He grew up in Glendale, California in Glenoaks Canyon. With an adventurous spirit, Joseph loved to hike in the canyon foothills, and ski and snowboard at Mammoth Mountain.He attended Glenoaks Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson Middle School, both in Glendale and he graduated from St. Francis High School in La Canada.He was a Cub Scout in Den 125 and then part of Boy Scout Troop 125, Verdugo Hills Council. Joe attained Eagle Scout in 2003.He worked at Universal Studios Hollywood and in 2008 earned the Audio Recording Engineer Certificate from Los Angeles Recording School.Joseph joined the United States Army in May 2011. He went through basic trainingat Fort Leonard Wood.He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas where he met his wife Melissa. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Sgt. Joseph F. Stifter, 30, died on Jan. 28 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq from injuries he suffered when his armored Humvee was involved in a rollover accident.His military awards and decorations include three army commendation medals: The Army Good Conduct Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge.Joseph is survived by his wife Melissa and two year old daughter Olivia, parents, Regina and Fred and brother John and sister Ellen.Viewing, February 10th beginning 6 pm with recitation of the Rosary at 7 pm, Cabot & Sons, Pasadena.Mass of Christian Burial, February 11th, 10 am, St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, La Canada.Internment, San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
