Lawrence B. "Red" Cates, 82, of Maryville, Illinois passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014 at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.
He was born January 20, 1932 in Hardin, Illinois, a son of the late Jasper Cates and the late Anna Mae (Roach) Casey.
He married Imogene (Bishop) Cates on June 12, 1954 in Troy, Illinois.
He retired in 1994 from Granite City Steel after many years of dedicated service as a laborer. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family.
In addition to his beloved and cherished wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carol Wolfe of Edwardsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patricia Cates of Troy; two granddaughters, Sara and Tim Bennett and Heather Cates; a grandson, Aaron and Celia Cates; five great grandchildren, Kayla, Brendan, Emily, Nora and Cason; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Isaiah Cates and two sisters, Imogene Davis and Vergene Cates.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Gary Anderson officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at the Quercus Grove Cemetery in Edwardsville.
Memorials may be made to the Glen-Ed Pantry or to Holiday Shores Fire Department and may be accepted at the funeral home.
