Haagsma, Gerald D 5/25/1935 - 10/19/2020 Gowen MI / Leesburg FL Gerald (Jerry) Duane Haagsma: 5/25/1935 – 10/19/2020 Age 85, joined his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 19, 2020 Jerry loved spending time with his family. Graduate of Western Christian High School, Sanborn Iowa. After marrying the love of his life, Kathleen; he went off to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War. He joined the Grand Rapids Fire Dept in 1963 and served 32 years retiring in 1995. Jerry's service to the City of Grand Rapids primarily took place at Engine house 1 on both truck and rescue squad. Jerry loved remodeling homes and doing handyman projects. He served the Christian Reformed Church as both Deacon and Elder and was active in prison ministries through Crossroads. He ensured a strong work ethic with his children that were entrusted to his care. After retiring chose to serve disaster relief opportunities through Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. Jerry was a true Servant to all those in need and even some of those in want. Most remembered by those who met and loved him was his awesome sense of humor. He could turn any sadness to laughter and lift your spirits in any circumstance. He was preceded in death by his Brother Jim and Jim's wife Mary Haagsma; Sister Joyce VanLaan and Sister-in-Law Pansy Haagsma. Surviving are his Wife of 65 year, Kathleen Joyce Haagsma, Brothers Bob Haagsma, Don (Micki) Haagsma, Mike (Cheryl) Haagsma, Ken (Lois) Haagsma. Children, Shiella (Kerry) Parcels, Larry (Jody) Haagsma, Steve Haagsma, Bill (Michelle) Haagsma. Many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Saturday October 24th 2020 at New Hope Community Church, 6175 Northland Dr NE, Rockford, MI 49341 at 11:00am with a service immediately following at 1:00pm. Please note: Masks are required and a Live Service Stream will be available for those who are high risk or Travel limitations. Facility has limited capacity of 75 personnel due to Covid Restrictions. Link to Live service is: www.newhopecc.com/watch-live/ and follow the simple on screen instruction to the live feed. The family requests in lieu of flowers to please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Our condolences to the Haagsma family. Jerry was a wonderful guy and genuine "Hero", as are all in the department. My dad enjoyed his working days with Jerry, and later in the church family, and he will be missed. Our prayers are with you all at this time.
